Getting rid of the donut spare

I just had one tire replaced under hazard "warranty". I would like to get another alloy wheel and make the new tire my spare when I buy another set of tires in the future. Has anyone tried this and will a stock alloy wheen and tire fit in the trunk cavity where the donut resides?

Maybe when it gets warmer and the driveway dries out. Too damn cold out there to be playing with wheels.
