personally i would just let them rub away, that way you get a custom fit lol
and as kobe says, they protect other stuff such as a CAI (thinking more so of the wires above the tires; or how about, so you don't throw rocks up, and actually dent the fender from the inside out)
so i would leave them in personally

, also forgot to add, once it does rub itself away, it will still be quieter (due to less tire/road noise, from the liner blocking the majority of it, and keeping it from echoing inside the fender too) then a similar car without the liners
btw, if you also want to help speed the process up some, you can also trim around the spot where the tire has already rubbed, so the tire does not have to rub as much away, or be lazy and let the tire do all the work

i feel it gets pretty noisy down there with no plastic guard. i had to do this when mine get ripped off. pretty embarrassing when the gf asks me wtf is wrong with my car.
though she asks that quite a bit no thanks to Azine

careful with just letting it "rub itself off" I put snowtires on my ride (lowered) and have been driving all winter so far and was getting the same rub when i turn and eventually the wheel well guards just came off while driving on the highway yesterday (kinda scared the piss outta me) and now today I just had to remove the whole middle piece under the bumper because one side of it came loose and was dragging on the ground.

had anyone ever replaced that whole piece? My sister crashed my car a few years back and that whole underside got mangled but since then i've replaced the front bumper + repainted etc. but after today, I'm not so sure it's a good idea to continue driving in the winter with that piece off in the winter.... any advice?

btw make sure to order a bag of clips (like 10 or so, so they are all new, cause they break most of the time, when you try and remove them)
also get the "late" production 2003 ones; they have a noise deadining pad, on the topside of them (it's kinda like the stuff, on the underside of the trunk floor, touching the spare tire, but "weatherized" instead though)

Cool thanks for the reply man, will definitely get those clips + extras - turns out the middle part is ok, the fender pieces are done though. I will have to replace those for sure, and just have the middle piece + clips re-attached
