Does tire size affect mileage?

I remember reading an article once that said a wider tire will reduce your gas mileage. Is this true beyond unnoticeable amounts? It doesn't make sense to me if it is true. I understand that a larger diameter tire will affect it, but a wider tire?

I am putting new tires on my TL-P and want to get 225/55/16, I was under the impression that this size wont affect anything but improved handling from 205/60/16.

Those tire sizes are virtually identical.
If you had any decrease in gas mileage due to the wider contact patch, it would be minimal.

You'll be fine.

I went from the stock mxv, 205-16s to 235-40-18 tires/rims, and the overall tire rotation distance is nearly identical.
Any loss in economy came from buying nice and sticky tires and enjoying how well they hang on in turns under throttle....but driven normally, not a big change

the 225 after 205 in same diameter will give improved cornering response that you can feel.
Buy good tires and really change the TL into a responsive ride!

Some other threads have reported 1-2 mpg losses when going to stickier rubber.
More rubber on the ground = more friction.

I actually get worse with my 215/55/16 snow tires than i do with my 225/40/18 summer tires.
