need some recommendations. 01 TL, need new shocks, I have originals I think with 113k miles. I wanna drop them, I'm looking for a little drop and get of rid of the huge gap on the front. I still want a great ride though, don't want it to be a stiff ride. If I do drop, will the ride get uncomfortable? And what website you guys suggest?

with 113k miles.. i'd suggest getting new shocks.. since you're gonna lower.. look into aftermarket ones (ie, tokico HP, Koni, Bilstein) and then get H&R sports(only cuz fsttyms1 is going to say H&R haha) Eibach, or Tein...

if you get the Tokico HP with the tein s-techs..it should be close to stock... but with the amount of money going into both of those.. get the Tein basics coilover...

tein basic coilovers are going under 900. don't wanna spend that much, i see eibachs pro kit and pro dampers for 550 (pro system). And do I need to change the mount and boot? If so, which one should I get? and I have stock rims

So after all this, my question is what is the best combination of shocks and springs (not coilovers) for a 2nd gen tl-s. I dont want more than an 1 inch drop and the lowest i'll go is 1.5. I dont want to loose my smooth ride either. any advise folks?

Agree, H&R OE and maybe the koni yellow for if you wanted to try lower you could put it on the lower perch.

in order to lower the perch, don't you have to take off the whole shock spring assembly and then lower perch? thought i heard that from somewhere... if you ask me.. thats a PITA..... haha

Yes you do but it gives you WAY more ride adjustability. You cant adjust rebound/dampening with the blues. Nor can you adjust the height. I didnt mean it as quick go out and change it, just that it has the option that if you "WANTED" to you could.

I'm with the H&R Sport spring + Tokico HP (blue) crowd. My TL-S already had the H&R Sports installed when I bought it, but on stock shocks. I just had the stockers replaced with the Tokicos and it's a huge difference in ride quality and handling!

H&R Sports give a mild 1.75" Front/1.5" Rear drop that works perfect IMO. I don't scrape on any driveways and the only caution I need to take for the front (no lip kit for me) around very high curbs when I park.

They are good if your just looking for a cheap OE style shock. Id go with at least a tokico blue at the least or koni yellow at the best

I was told that the KYB GR2 shocks aren't really up to handling a mild drop, and definitely not an aggressive one. I understand that both the Koni yellow and Tokico blue were designed for lowered apps.

if all you want to do is lower it then just get some shitty springs and throw them on. i dropped mine like 2.5 or a little bit more i think for like 110$ i still have a nice ride unless you go over a huge ass bump and it looks really sharp. i got rid of both wheel gaps!!!!!!!!!!

How about spring rates???

I definitely like how the H&R springs lowers the ride, but I'm wondering if I should get the Tokico's or Bilsteins shocks if I want a SMOOTHER ride? (at least not too much harder than the original type-s feel) I know Bilsteins are the greatest shocks, and they're in BMW's and what-not, but I'm curious, our cars are much heavier, anyone think they can give us similar ride quality?

Thumbs up

Neuspeed Race and Koni Yellows, H&R RACE with Koni's EIBACH could rock with Koni's also......

Springs, shocks are made on a car by car basis, including the spring rates valving. The ride will be in most cases better than stock

Perfect. Thanks for this. I was contemplating on just getting the H&R sport springs by themselves or getting springs/HPs at the same time. Guess I'll just buy them at the same time...

That's what I would have done if I owned the car when the springs were put on. On our 6-year-old cars, replacing both will be a HUGE improvement in ride quality, handling and comfort. You're going to be very happy with this combo.
