18" versus 17" Wheels on 2000 TL

Hey everyone

I am ready now to buy my wheels. I have found the wheels that will work in both 18 with a 45 offset and the 17 with a 39 offset.

I am curious if the bigger wheel really makes that much of a difference visually.

I am also taking a road trip with 3 friends and I dont want the weight to be a problem with rubbing or anything. The wheels are both 7.5" wide so there shouldnt be a problem there.

What do you think?

Also what is the best overall tire that I can buy and where can I get it

I need for the 18"

235/40/18

and for the 17"

215/50/17

Any Advice?

I don't think offset +39 will fit our TL. The offset must be from +42 to +50.
If I were you, I would go for 18".
Toyo Proxes 4 is pretty good!! It's a ultra-high performance all season tire!! Should have a very good grip!!

I am getting the Foose 112's.

Supposedly the guy at Les Schwab called and MHT and they said it will work.....I am confused......UGH!!!

I really want to go to the 18" but it jumped up almost $1000 and I am a student.....So I think I want to get the 17"......I wonder how I can find out if it will work for sure.....Maybe I can call MHT myself do you think? It says online that the offset is 39.....Will that rub even on 17"?

Thanks for the advice.

what...that place is whack. going from 17s to 18s isn't a big price jump...from 18s to 19s is though. you should really consider going somewhere else if the price is almost a 1k difference.

The amount of offset required is determined by the width of the wheel and not the diameter. Remember that the stock wheel specs are 6.5" width & +55 offset. Ideally you want to stay as close to these specs as possible. Of course if you go wider selecting the right offset will become much more important. Bottom line...the closer you can go to +55 offset the better off you are.

39 offset will rub

18's look better and are slightly more harsh
17's would be more comfortable if you have tons of bumps/potholes

Well I called both Les Schwab, and MHT themselves and they assured me the 17" Foose Wheels with a 39 offset would work just fine on the 2000 TL.....So I am ordering them tomorrow and next week I guess we will find out....I will be very upset if it doesnt work, these people are supposed to be professionals. Also, the only other offset is 45 and only offered on 18" and larger....and I want to keep some of my ride.....Besides I saw a nice GS430 with 17" wheels and they look great IMO!

They may be professionals but they are also salespeople trying to make a living. I sure hope you get some written guarantees that these wheels will fit without any rubbing, regardless if you're dropped or not.
Good luck with your purchase.

Hope you don't have any rubbing issues. Lawaia is right. that is too low of an offset even for 17" and plus i am sure that that guy that you where working with is not experienced enough to give you that kind of advice. Eugene is a slow town, but i am not knocking it, i have many a friends down that way it is just that they don't get TLs on a regular basis to give that kind of advice... Good luck

I bought TSW Super Model chrome 18 x 7 45 offset with Falken Azenis tires. Looks great, no rub, nice ride, wicked handling. Set of 4 shipped from Discount Tire for about $1700
