What is po170 ?

google it! bet its egr plugged or a coil (without knowing code detail)

O2 would be more likely
I would run seafoam thru the gas so it cleans the sensor for you
there is an electrical resistance test for the part
or figure if you are well over 100-150kmiles,,its just due
on the diy list- are all the codes https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/new-official-2nd-gen-tl-diy-thread-706083/
done the egr cleaning yet?
car miles?

100 k miles on it. I had a thread started a few months ago about it not cranking after I replaced head gaskets. Lots of people thought I had a timing issue and it actually was because it needed a new crank sensor. It had gotten hot and melted out of shape so it could not pick up when to fire properly. I thought most of the worst heat would be at the top of the engine not so low down but I was wrong. Also, I've replaced all the coils. 4 were bad so I replaced all six. I got po300 codes. You could actually see bad cracks in a couple of them. I do not get the 300 level codes now. It runs ok except when I am idling. It has sat for almost 7 or 8 months now. I appreciate yours and everyone's input so far. Per your advice I'm going to try seafoam.

wow you must have hit redline temps a few or more times to cause that much heat damage!!
was it water pump failure -rad cracked or what--I dont recall every car on azine~
yeah if it was my car- seafoam the gas twice, seafoam thru the TB throat to get air plate
Remove intake manifold and TB for full egr cleaning..get the iacv on clean TB as well

did you replace the spark plugs--with that kind of heat issues I would expect they took a hit too
pull a front (easy to reach) and ck its condition

seems a trend- car sits several months - fuel gums and gells up then gets introduced to the system
result clogged iacv and other injector parts = seafoam to the rescue!!
or bg or redline in fuel so as not to appear totally biased~
seafoam is an excellent `parts cleaner` of carbon encrusted parts like the iacv rod

Spark plugs iridium 8 or 9 bucks each, and they are new. My father just drove it hot until it quit. I put in a new water pump as well as timing belt. Seafoam helped but I'm still getting a series of running rich codes like 172 and 170. Runs pretty good on the road, but not idling well still. It doesn't cut off just vibrates and makes me nervous at stoplights. The code is enough to get a check engine light which is not allowing me to get an inspection up here in NC. I ran a bottle of seafoam through vacuum port at the tb( thanks for the diy list) and put a pint in the gas tank.

1 can= 16 ounces.. in just under half tank of gas/8 gallons, will clean up that gel issue--do that twice and its good for a year
oww, drove it till it stopped--that hurts~
What the compression like now? too low and its not going to run well at low rpm
If comps ok, the O2 sensor is a good candiate for rough running,,only real reason for rich --once seafoam has run thru the tank and injectors so they are misting again--might be spurting and throwing too much fuel
Might be heat damage to injectors?
just thinking extreme if the normal cks out ok
Is it too much fuel or not enough combustion? the front O2 sensor adjust things
to make it run
Did we already go thru the TB cleaning- with removal of iacv rod ??
thats your other big idle prob,,do it with the egr
We will get you thru inspection and return that sewing machine smoothness

remember that codes are clues = not diagnosis in themself--
they point to a problem and sometimes name the actual failed part--sometimes not

brick- ask the inspection station if they run `pretest` for 20 bucks- so you can see what the exhaust gas numbers really are- if its rich it will be off the charts.
bad O2 will fluctuate reading
When the TL is right it barely registers, with zero and one as most of the readings,,average of all cars tested ~15
we are ultra low emission vehicles
