VTEC sensor

I was told by a mechanic I would soon need a VTEC sensor. Even though he explained what it is I could use clarification, could someone please explain what this part is, does and is located on the engine? Thank you in advance.

From: Baja, México.
There isn't such thing as a "VTEC Sensor"..
There is a VTEC SOLENOID but I'm pretty curious to know how he diagnosed that the Solenoid is needed? A Solenoid Engages or it Doesn't.. It doesn't wear out.

how about giving us the symptoms, and we can give you a better diagnosis
year miles when did it start acting up, exactly what does it do and when?

vtec engages approx. 5000rpm (give or take 500 depending on year/model)
There must be sufficient oil in the engine or it wonk kick in!!
Vtec operates on oil pressure and changes in oil pressure to know when to be on
