Vibration While braking, which aftermarket to buy?

I have a 2000 TL with about 96K miles on it.

It vibrates pretty badly during braking, often accompanied by steering wheel shaking.

I'm pretty sure its the front brake rotors. I've had the front pads replaced once and I think had the rotors turned then several years ago. I think that took care of the problem for a couple of years before gradually returning to the point that I need to do something about it again.

Since its due for its 105K timing belt and related service, I'm expecting to have the mechanic attend to the brakes at the same time. It seems like new rotors don't cost that much more than getting them turned.

I see Amazon has Brembos that look just like the original equipment that are about $140 a pair. Will these have the same problem as the original equipment? A little puddle and they warp?

What would you guys recommend I get for replacement rotors and pads.

I'm not interested in racing or improving the look. I'm more than satisfied with the OEM brakes in just about every regard other than proneness to warping.

For me in rough order of priority are.

Safe
Silent
Smooth
Clean
Won't Warp
Inexpensive
Long Lasting
Bite and Short Stopping Distance

I'm looking for something that won't warp and that is equal or better than OEM in those categories at minimal cost.

I've had success with r1concepts rotors from ebay.
I got them a couple months ago. they were $150-something shipped for the set (4), cross-drilled/slotted. I have about 5k miles on them so they're still pretty new, but no warping. as for pads, i'd go with OEM if you want quiet.

they haven't rusted also, which is surprising, with all the rain in the NE lately
but i do expect them to soon.

can't really comment on the brembo blanks though

racingbrake rotors have treated me very well for the past year.

no problems wat so ever..

rotora is also good. EBC rotors are not that bad either.

Thanks for the response jjashaa. I haven't looked up racingbrake, but aren't rotora like $1500? That's more than I want to spend by an order of magnitude.

I'm not trying to pimp out my ride, I just want brakes that are as good as OEM that won't warp.

haNDYcaptd is more in the price ballpark I'm talking about. Thanks.

look up racingbrake rotors at heeltoeauto.com

last time i checked rotora rotors were like 175 shipped for our cars from excelerate.

those that you looked up were the big brake kits..

all you need is the rotor replacements..

racingbrakes are really well for daily drive and track enthusiast..

i bought mine thinkin i'd track one day but never did and took a different turn..

they do look fancy and everything but i got them only for that extra braking power and to get rid of my retarded warped stock ones.

also upgraded with EBC red stuff pads but the green stuff are good enough.

as for brembos, ive heard of them rusting pretty bad unless you paint the rotor hat

Can you point me to the one's you got? The only thing I see in that price range is their blanks which seem the same as dirt cheap ones I could get from Amazon plus zinc plating. That should help the rust but it doesn't seem like it would be better against warping.

I think EBC rotors are more than I want to spend. It looks like with the discount I could get front and rear rotors for about $270.

And yes, I forgot it was whole kits with calipers when looking at Rotora in the past.

I'll have to check those out too.



I like the Hawk Ceramic pads, but unfortunately AJ's site seems to just list the rears.

In checking, I also see sets from Brake Labs that include Posi-Quiet ceramic pads that look good to me from some Google searching. Does anybody have experience with these pads or this vendor? I can get the whole set for about $213 delivered which includes $100 worth of pads

have you considered just getting a set of front rotors? the car hardly uses rear brake. the powerslots i ordered were not in stock til 5/29 so i went with the DBA 4000 series slotted rotors. i heard that DBA is really good, so i bit and ordered them with pads. 295 shipped

Yes, I have and will consider just the front, but if I'm already messing around with it and we're talking $70 or so more for the rear and everything will match and the rear needs to at least get inspected anyway I might as well get them too.

I'm hoping I can go another several years without touching the brakes again. Who knows if I'll still have the car beyond that. That's why I don't want to go too crazy with upgrades. This car is 9 years old.
