Trouble Fueling

I did a search but could not find anything on this subject. While filling up my 99TL the auto shut off on the gas pump nozzle keeps clicking off. This started about six months ago but not at all gas stations. About the same time this started I got a CEL for a "Evap Canister Leak". Not sure these are related but trying to fill the tank up with this happens is almost impossible. Any suggestions of where to start?

Don't fill up when you are almost bone empty. Fill up when you got about 1/4 tank left.

I don't know why this happens but I have had it happen to me. My sister's car was doing the same thing. I learned to work around it by putting the nozzle in the car and then turning it sideways so that the bottom of the handle (where the hose from the pump connects) is pointing towards the back of the car. I don't know why this works but it does. I think it creates a "swirl effect" as it goes into the tank (like water in a drain or toilet), causing the fuel to create less backflow and therefore not triggering the overflow shutoff on the pump handle.

my friend had a similar prob on his car.
when the gas goes in the tank, the air thats in there needs to come out. there is a separate pipe and that gets clogged sometimes, rust or what-have-you. look at that. its a matter of pressure.

Thanks. I will look at that as soon as I can. I thought it might be related to the Evap Canister Leak CEL I am getting. I'll trace the pipes and hoses to see if any are plugged. Maybe I can fix two problems.
