A bunch of people are going to suggest going w a used 06-07 Honda accord v6 tranny. You should look into that.

Doesnt Matter the TIPTRONIC in our TLs only Manually Shifts the Transmission instead of Full AUTO, That Feature didnt came with the Accord.

Once you swap all the Range Switches and Sensors from your old Trans into the New Accord Trans everything will work as always.

I would Suggest the 06-07 Accord V6 Tranny...

if you can rebuild it yourself, I suggest going that route, it'll be the cheapest. If you can't do it yourself, throw in a used one and call it a day. 06-07 is a good alternative. late model 05 and 06 tl is not too bad either.

Triptronic will work fine, and the newer transmissions won't have the same shitty failure rate. Definitely go that route instead of getting another cursed tranny.

since you appear to have an original 02 trans ,,not a post 05 warranty unit with the improved case design,,I would go used accord/oddessey trans ..there are plenty of threads on what years are best and what years to avoid

figure trans 750, and same for labor to do the remove and install,,,total $1500
call some local honda ricer racer type shops- they do engine swaps every week on their own street/race cars
many junkyards/auto recyclers have a competant shop on site that rebuilds wrecks for resale--they might do an engine swap when you buy from them,,or know a good place for a decent price.

let your fingers do the walking!

With a 99 being 4 speed, would people with the 4 speed new a new ecu, possibly tachometer (different red line?), and a bunch of harness to convert it over?

You would need a new ECU. You could get a new cluster too, but don't necessarily have to. I don't think the cluster would work right though, because the 99 is a weirdo.

Redline is established by the engine's capabilities. Has nothing to do with tranny or ECU. Well the ECU controls it, but the engine is the real factor of going boom or not.

So how hard is a tranny swap? My 2002 TL-S tranny is starting to slip and so far my options are to trade it, or have the dealer replace the tranny @ $4300.

I have pretty much all of the standard tools that would be required, just none of the specialized Acura ones if any are needed. I am a fair backyard mechanic having rebuilt a number of engines and putting a whole new suspension under the TL-S a few years ago.

Thanks,
Dan

I know this has prolly been covered in a hundred other threads, and im a little late to the game, but i agree with 01tl4tl used 3rd gen oddy or 7th gen accord is the best way to go. Just got an 05 oddy trans with 100,000miles on it off of ebay for 900. The swap wasn't hard plus I've never had any luck with "rebuilt" anything, so I try to go used whenever possible.

You probably could have found them cheaper locally with less miles

Yeah, I considered it. But then my lazieness got the best of me and hey who can argue with a transmission being delivered right to your door. As it is though, I actually didn't mind paying a little more because the whole transaction went so smoothly.

And if you know of a cheeper one with less miles and free shipping... I don't want to know about it lol. I can still rationalize it because the shipping was free lol

I would recommend an auto trans shop specializing on hondas/acuras over a used tranny. Why? For one, no one really knows the condition of that used tranny and if you're lucky, you'll just get 3 months warranty on parts and/or labor. On rebuilds, warranty goes for one year...parts and labor at least with the shop I spoke with here in the Los Angeles area plus the important parts that need replacing, are new.
That is the route I am taking just in case my tranny breaks down.
So far Im at 204500 + miles on my original tranny and engine...2KTLP.

i did the swap on mid early december 2012 with an 07 accord tranny into my 02 tl-p

swapped my car at 114k on the body and the accord tranny had 135k when i swapped

as of today 1/11/13, i am at work, i am at 117k miles and everything is working just fine no issues at all so far--so thats 138k on tranny now

i say go this route, me and a bunch of other aziners will recommend it. i got tranny for around $900 and paid a friend labor so came out just under $1500, tranny was warrantied for parts for 60 months and my buddy warrantied labor for same period so good deal.

sport shift mode works fine as long as you switch all the right parts over from tl tranny, and it's VERY simple once you have both trannies side by side.

my only regret was not doing it sooner and living with that POS tl tranny. our original thread with swap info is on the main page under "06-07 trans swap"

Well I had mine completely rebuilt with all new Acura parts. My original tranny went 223K, so I guess I got lucky. I will say that with all new upgraded parts, my TL is a beast. There is no way in hell I would go with a used tranny unless it was an Accord/Oddy swap.

I thought about a used tranny too, but went with a rebuilt one. I got the warantee bumped up to 3/36,000. Perhaps the best way to go would be a rebuilt 06-07 Accord tranny?

Hey B.TL, what year TL and how many miles were on your car's original tranny this last time that it was replaced ? Did they rebuild your tranny or was it off the shelf ? How much was the total bill for everything ? Are you satisfied with the shop's work and have confidence in the warranty ?

You've bought yourself some time and saved the expense of a new car payment, but keep the warranty paperwork in a safe place !!!!!!

Thanks. Definitely holding onto the warranty paperwork and all receipts for future fluid changes too!
2003 TL-P, 121,000. Had the blue bolts on it. I had it for all of 6 weeks. My mechanic sent it off to be rebuilt. I've known the mechanic for 20+ years (OMG, didn't realize it was that long) and he swears by the rebuilder. Total for rebuild and labor was $3500.
Next week I will talk to the guy who rebuilt my tranny and ask him some questions for good measure. I'll ask him about the Accord 06-07 swap and see what he thinks.
It's a good car, but the tranny issue is a major weakness. Minus that, it would be a great car.

I spent 3,400 on the repair and labor, but my car runs like it's brand new. I had a new torque converter put on, as well as a complete Master Overhaul kit. I also got new internal and external filters, 3rd gear drum assembly, a piston set for the 3rd gear drum assembly, and of course the Honda fluid.

Finnished the swap with oddy trans. I think my range switch is just a little off because the gear select posiotions are a touch higher than where they are suposed to be. But its not really causing any problems as of yet the trans shifts fine and im not showing any codes as of yet. 900 total, but this is in part to the fact that I did the work myself

Hey B.TL, that's actually a pretty good warranty......alot better than some. You're good to go for the next couple of years as long as the shop stays in business and you keep up your end of the warranty's fine print !

When having the original tranny's replaced or rebuilt, nothing is a given....so consider the warranty worth it's weight in gold, as that's what you were paying for in reality !!!

Thanks. The transmission place has been around since the 1950's and it turns out I work with the previous owner's daughter! It was her brother that rebult built my torque converter as he has a shop just across the street.
I will do all tranny fluid changes with my mechanic and keep all receipts in case it craps out prematurely. If it doesn't, I am seriously considering going with the 2006-7 tranny from an Accord when the warranty is up.

What's shakin ? Welcome BigBootyJudy99 !!!

Sorry to hear about the bed shitting, but with the '99 models ....it's not quite as common as the newer 5 speed AT's in the '00 and up models. The '99 used the older and more durable 4 speed design tranny.

Unfortunately, I still have the 5 speed AT. I'm unsure if the '03 CLS 6 speed tranny will work without a substantial amount of extra effort. For your oddball '99 model, you may be limited to finding another 4 speed AT or rebuilding your present tranny. But anything is possible if ya have the right knowledge and skills to improvise a solution.

The 99 Tl has proved to be the most reliable over all the 2nd gen trannys you might want to find a used one at a salvage yard to get you by and save you some bucks.

Looks like my tranny is about to shit the bed. Some people are talking about going with newer generation tranny and swapping it with 06-07 V6 Accord

For above car, which swap would you recommend? Would you go through Honda dealer? and what would you use? Remanufacture, rebuild?? what other things we will have to replace when you swap a accord tranny? what is the ballpark cost?

Where are you located? Best bet is the Av6 trans from the accord. See if there is a shop near you can do the swap. You can check car-part for used AV6

If you can DIY, get an '07 Accord tranny and do the swap. Should be able to do the whole project for under $1000. You'll just need the tranny and some gaskets and o-rings for swapping the filter pieces over (listed in the DIY). Check car-part.com.

Thanks guys for your replies.
I'm not a DIY and will need local mechanic to do this. You get ACCORD 05-06-07 A6 tranny and miscellaneous hardware, do you also have to replace ECM/PCM? or basically A6 tranny comes with all the pressure switches, solenoids etc you basically plug and play. Let me know please.
