Similar situation with me: I'd only gotten work done at the dealership twice, amounting to more than $300 worth of work. However, the ACS case manager stated, "you'd only been to the dealership a couple times, you bought the car used (keep in mind I bought it at an Acura dealership), etc." And I was in school too...yet I was still rejected ANY assistance.

Who you deal with plays a large role.

Ah...the joys of buying used cars. I'm the original owner of a 2002 TL-S with 163K miles on it currently. My first tranny went out around 45K-50K and Acura replaced that for free with a rebuilt one. My SECOND tranny went out around 80K-85K and Acura replaced that for free with a rebuilt one. I'm so glad I bought an extended warranty for the car. The car still runs great. But now I'm paranoid. I always take it to the dealer for service and for regular maintenance.

I recently bought a TSX V6 and I made sure I got a 120K miles extended warranty. Acura makes great cars...but they're definitely not perfect.

^ With that info above, you've probably got a pretty good chance at getting good will assistance from Acura in the event your extended warranty doesn't cover you.

-beats the dead horse- Another tl-s with a bad tranny. I had been talking to my co-worker about buying his tl-s since he's got an 07 Camry and wouldnt you know it, at 135k after the oil jets had supposedly been installed to "prevent" this it failed. Getting off the ramp *clunk* D5 starts flashing and the CEL turns on. All services have been performed at the stealership even the oil changes which a monkey can do. Open Road Acura of East Brunswick wanted nothing to do with it since it was "out of warranty" even though the vin was included in the range. Called AHM and told the gentleman on the other side of the line our dilema to which he responded "take it to the dealership and have them run diagnostics, if it failed because of the recall they'll replace the transmission at no cost to you". So this morning the flat bed dropped it off at Open Road Acura of Wayne in NJ, and i have to say that is by far the best service i've received so far. I was even offered a loaner even though it was my buddy's car I took in. Im awaiting the call to hear the verdict daddy needs to dump this maxima and get himself a tl-s nav!

Hey Guys, Like P.Diddy I'm also new to the site, but new how crappy the tranny's are. I'm the original owner of a '99 TL. Had the tranny go out on me twice, both times the dealership replaced them with rebuilt ones. Third time it went, around 130-150 k they decided to put a 2000 tranny in. Anyways a week ago I was heading out on the onramp and downshifted from 3rd-2nd and had a VERY hard downshift, couple of minutes after that my sport shifting wouldn't work, D4 started to flash and the TCS light came on. The odd time the sport shifting will work, and when driving the car seems to have lost some power and also is slipping sometimes. Someone please help!! Thanks

Original owner of a 2000 TL with 150k+ miles. Still original tranny despite somewhat aggressive driving habits (use sports shift almost exclusively). Thinking of buying another TL sometime in the next year or two. Have they fixed the tranny problems yet? Anything else I should worry about?

In a '99? The 2000 tranny is a 5-speed

In 2 days.

Seriously though, how the heck would we know...

Monitor your fluid condition. Drop the pan for a closer inspection. Pull some of the solenoids & inspect.

That's what the dealership had told us, but obviously not then. But since they had put the new one in, whenever the car was in automatic and not SS the car never knew when gear to be in when floating around 80km/h. It would always switch btwn 3rd-4th and vice versa, but now the SS doesnt work and the automatic shifting seems to be slipping??

Damn i never wanted to have to post in this thread but faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawk. All my lights came on yesterday. Went to autozone and had code p0740. I drove home and it would slip just a little from 2-3rd. Before i got home it started slipping real bad and then would jerk. Looked like i was hittin switches lol. I couldnt drive i had to pull over and my D5 light was flashing this time.

So i pulled over and reset the ecu and then it would drive just like normal again. I got home checked the fluid and it was brown and smelled horrible
. I bought some honda ATF and changed the oil. started her up and it drove way better that before but still a slight slip in low gears. I drove like 20 miles and then all of a sudden the lights came back on and D5 was flashing and the car wouldnt move. I coasted to a stop. In any gear the car wouldnt move. So real quick i pulled the back up clock fuse again and started the car and no lights and she drove home fine.

So If my tranny was trashed why would a simple reset let it drive good again? Im still gonna look into the solenoids or switches to see if thats the problem. I know you can clean out the screens on the 99's but is there anything else i can clean or try for my 00 5AT tranny? Im gonna continue reading threads and searching. This is the 2nd tranny it was just replace in 08 and has 30k miles on it.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

I just upgraded Dec 31, little bro bought my 1st gen and I bought my uncle's 2000 TL-P, and now I'm screwed... I noticed a weird response a couple days ago, but brushed it off as a comp glitch; but no, yesterday I made a turn with an uphill incline and it slipped pretty bad, and half-hour later, I finally made it to the g.f's house and the CEL and TCS lights came on (no D5 blinking tho...) and it wouldn't even get up the driveway. Haven't even made it to the first oil change! My dealership here isn't doing a goodwill fix, Acura isn't going to intervene, the tranny has ~80k on it, and the car is at ~162k. Luckily my uncle had all the service done at his stealership, and he's gonna put in a call, hopefully I'll just shell out a couple bucks (relatively) for transport from South to North Jersey. So bummed, and the annoying thing is, I thought they fixed this problem! He had it replaced in Sept. '06 @ ~86k, well after the issue was resolved, so why is this happening? Any thoughts?

'03 TL-S...3rd tranny...

Why does it feel like the damn third one is as shitty as the 1st and 2nd? Im pretty sure the dealer told me that the last replacement was equivalent to an '05? Is this true? Last one was replaced in August '09. put on 10k so far. and it still feels like its a slow trans. Should I just shell the car off to get away from daily worry about spending another $3000?

I love the car but I wouldn't replace a crappy design with another crappy design with yet another exact crappy design...if this thing needs another one within 36k miles (warranty) im getting it replaced on their dime and getting rid of it.

I have a 2003 TLS and its tranny just blew. I had bought a 100,000 extended warranty and now I am at 106,000. Is there any way I can get this done without paying for it, or some I can complain to? I paid 2,000 for the warranty. Can anyone help me?

A quote from a Cdn dealer cited $6300+ for installed new trans for '02 TL. Rebuilt around $4000+

so the car sat since october and now that i have some money its over at aamco as we speak. so far im down for $485 for them to pull and disasemble it, and diagnose. that cost goes into the final cost of repair, which i should find out later this afternoon.

you already fucked up. i would never take my car to ammco. so there basically charging you $485 to tell you that your tranny is fucked up. so now they can quote you any crazy price since the tranny is out and taken apart. then if you refuse to pay what they quote they can still charge you to put it back together and put it back in the car. ive heard of way too many rip off stories about ammco.

They're charging me 485 so that I don't have them do hours and hours of work for free and then take it somewhere else to have the work done. I think that's more than reasonable. This might bother me if I was considering several places to get the work done, but I'm not. I just want the car fixed and back on the road.

You're right, aamco doesn't have the best reputation but I'm between a rock and a hard place with this car. I have 126,000 miles so I'm well out of the extended warranty, the Acura dealer is also 30 miles away so I'd be looking at a decent tow bill just to get it there(and back if they decide they want to charge me 4000+, which seems to be their going rate)

here's what i know about aamco:

1. it's 4 blocks from my house.
2. it WILL be cheaper than acura

and you're right.. i did fuck up, by buying this car in the first place. first and last honda for me.

i still would have went anywhere but ammco. my tranny was acting up in january and i replaced it with an '07 TL tranny. i paid around $1600 for the tranny and labor. ammco may be cheaper but i dont think its going to be that much cheaper than acura.

whats amazing is all these tranny fault codes are p0740.

i got that same code in my 02 accord 4cyl and honda wouldnt fix the car since it wasnt part of the recall. Despite experiencing the same symptons as my friend who, at the time, was going on his third transmission. They wouldnt fix it under warranty.

Lucky for me an old lady ran a red light and totaled the car. At least she helped alleviate my problem with the transmisson.

Hey guys-
I have been reading through the forum for a while, but just signed up.

My fiances 2003 transmission popped a CEL the other day. P0780 - possible causes, low fluid, poor electrical connection, or failed shift solenoid.

I live 3 hours away from an Acura dealership, and Im trying to figure out if there is anyway I can salvage this car, or if the transmission is shot.

When driving it just wont shift into gear and will rev up. You can turn the car off and back on and then it will work for a while and start to do the same thing. The transmission fluid is black, which obviously isnt good, but its not low. I thought about changing the fluid out, but will old fluid really cause a transmission to run like that?

I am about to trade the car in and only get $1500 for it from the dealership, and I feel like its something else (might just be false hope). We only owe a little over $2000 left on the car after having it for years, and it just sucks because we were looking forward to losing the payment.

If anyone has any ideas what I could try, and replace, or ANYTHING in the next few days before I pull the trigger on a trade, I would be forever greatful.

thanks in advance,

Brad

Are you sure you are out of warranty? It should be covered for 7yrs 9mos/109k miles...03 is on the edge, and you may be eligible for some goodwill help...

in terms of actually saving the transmission, if it's gone it's gone, there isn't much that can be done to resurrect it

Well the car has 170k. What Im trying to figure out is if its solenoids or the transmission. Theres no clanking or anything like that, and honestly everytime I drive it I just feel like its electrical, but its undriveable at this point...

Does anyone know what I could maybe clean the solenoids with? I feel like I need to try something before I get rid of a perfectly fine car. Not to mention the brakes and tires I just put on it.

been a few weeks but i got my car back tonight.. ended up costing 2800+tax with a 1-year warranty(with an additional 1 month goodwill period) from AAMCO. car drove beautifully on the way back so here's to hoping that it stays that way.

in 2 weeks they want me back in for a followup check.

i was actually really happy with the way they handled everything.. it took them a while longer than i would have liked to procure the parts, but other than that everything went smooth and the price was just about what i expected

Acura gives 36K miles/3 year warranty. The full price can be anywhere from 4000-5000. I was offered $4200 (including ECU which you did not get from Amco). depends how long you wish to keep the car, I think if you could have it installed by Acura for 4500 with new ECU, its a better deal than Aamco.
