Tranny Failure Thread
Well just got back from taking mine to the dealership. Was slipping from 2nd to 3rd and eventually wouldn't shift into 3rd. Had a new transmission put in almost exactly a year ago, April 12. Lucky its under warranty but if they decide to put a new one in this will be the 3rd trans.
Still love my TL though
Forgot to add....car has 176,000 miles on it. So it definitely is not the orginal warranty. Paid extra last year because I had a feeling I was going to be replacing it again in the next 5 years.
Also....did anyone get any sh*t from the dealership about their mods? I don't want to get a call tomorrow from the dealership trying to get out of replacing the trans.

Yes, it is true that the final decision is made by the district manager. The Acura customer care number will help you if you file a case regarding your situation. They can contact your dealer and try and influence them to help take care of you. In your case I would be happy to go 50/50 on the cost at least then try and sell it. Just be patient and pleasant. Good luck.
Thanks for the reply AdamType-S! I would be very happy with 50/50 if I can get it!
My gut has been telling me to talk to the SM and after reading murky's experience, I think I will before I call Acura. Who is to assume he reads all his email? Maybe he can influence the zone mgr.
I did take it to my independent honda specialist for a quote and he was actually $150 higher than dealer with only a 1/12. He said he could get one from Honda, or from another company in CA. He said the one in CA ships theirs with a cooling fan attachment and that part of the problem was cooling. He pulled the same 730 code but deleted it. I've been driving it easy but it still slips daily. CE has not come back on but I'm sure a tech could drive it to so it throws a code.
I've gained a lot of insight from this forum. I'm thankful you are here!
Hope it works out murky.

Hi, am new and not sure if I'm posting correctly. I have read almost this entire thread, now ready for a stiff drink, as my 183,000 mile '01 TL is currently at the dealer and they are awaiting my final decision on fixing transmission...they originally quoted $6700, then came down to $4400, and won't budge, even after we've talked with client services and regional manager. We next are going to try corporate, but I'm heartbroken as I have really enjoyed my Acura. It sounds like I shouldn't try to fix this, instead get a new car, not Acura, according to many other's opinions. Any other advice? I have a local place that will do it for about 3300, including computer, but now I'm not sure...thanks for listening, any other thoughts/advice is much appreciated!!
ps - most of the car's life has been highway driving, it's only been in the past 6 months that I've done mostly city driving, about 4-5K. Does this have any effect?

Id sell it.

New symptoms
Well today the tranny started jerking. First time that has happened. Kinda scarey the first time. On the upshifts and down shifts in 2nd and 3rd. CE and TCS lights came on.
I hope I haven't done addl damage.
I hope I haven't done addl damage.
I have a '99 TL that has started to up shift hard between 1-2-3 and down shifts rough from 2-1(This morning the TCS light came on). I have 206K on the original tranny. I've read through several pages of this posting. From the information gathered, I might have to replace the tranny. Now a few of questions:
1. what is this extended warrany for $500 for 3/36?
2. will my car qualify for this?
3. If it doesn't, is it worth to do this b/c so many posting reference multiple replacements of transmissions?
I would like to keep my car for at least another couple of years if possible...so i have scheduled for a service check for the transmission and check engine light on Friday. Any help would be appreciated.

I almost got HIT the morning I was trying to take mine to the dealership to get it replaced and I left early, so there would be minimal traffic on the streets...
DO NOT chance it... you could get at the least, stranded, at the worst injured or killed... not worth the cost... EVER!

Rick
Not complaining in the least...I have received my monies worth almost twice over in this car. What I am looking for is information on the replacement process, prices that have been paid, and warranties out there. I do not want to spend another $2-3K and then not be covered for the new transmission. Also, I do not want to spend more than the car is worth. The engine is still going strong, so i don't mind keeping the car for some more time.
Good Day, I have unfortunately joined the club. Yesterday I took off from a stop light, when the tranny shifted into third--nothing but rpms shooting up. Had absolutely NO warning of slippage of 2nd or 3rd gear previously. D5 light was completely off, not bliking as everyone else has had. Also didnt have the christmas tree of lights mentioned on the dash. 03 TL-S- out of VIN range with 100,876 miles. Brought it straight to the dealer (i work right down the street). Talked directly to the service manager when I got there. Explained the situ to him asked how much it was going to cost, he said he will have to talk to someone in jacksonville, Fl. (im in mobile, al.) I was asked a bunch of questions about the vehicle's history, which he recorded on a "good will" form. I am the second owner for three years, but luckily the car was purchased at that very dealership to begin with, and I bought it at a honda dealership. All pluses according the SM. Called back today he had an email saying Acura would cover some of the costs, but he did not know how much yet until he talked to the guy in Fl. I told him about AZine and about how some of the people in my very situation got good willed tranny's and did not have to pay a cent. I told him I was willing to pay something 25/75, 10/90, 80/20. He also said something no one on hear has said before. Dont know if this is BS or not, but "Acura is not good willing any trannys for free any more" "This started after the first of the year" then he cited the economy and told me it was a good thing you didnt have an american car. I remember reading about others in feb. that got a free tranny and labor on the 03 "unaffected" vin. So what gives. I very politely told him that it was garbage that I and others have to suffer because Acura cannot engineer a tranny to meet the demands of thier newer high tech engines, he basicly agreed with me and said he was going to do everything in his power to help me. SM also said that the replacement would be a warranty replacement not a regular replacement and would cost $2400, not $3500 or $4000 if you came in and wanted your tranny fixed for other reasons. So we will see. Unfortunately I never got the tranny oil flushed, but I did just spend money on the timing belt, H2O pump service and front engine mount. Can anyone else thing of anything else I should have done? I have pretty much read every post of the 55 page thread. Sorry for the thesis. Discuss
For all of the failed trans. people that can't get any goodwill coverage visit this link. One of our vendors has a fantastic price on a factory remanufactured and redesigned transmission. Check out the link!!

Called the SM and he said he was playing phone tag with the I guess the regional manager. Although he did say the RM sounded like they were not going any lower than 50\50. I guess I will be calling the 1-800 number on Monday after I find out the shitty news. Any suggestions? Those of you guys with a 03 TL-S out of vin that got a better deal THIS YEAR, what did you do or say?
Just found out today Acura will only cover a small portion of the transmission. I will have to fork over $1800 for a newly rebuilt tranny that will probably fail as well. Acura customer car was no help either they told me the district parts manager has final say on all transmission issues. The service manager was on the phone with him for at least 40 minutes. I think after I get this tranny fixed I am going to trade in the TL for something else. Any offers on a NGP Type-S?
2003 TL Transmissions died at 84,000 - Warranty???
New member as of today… I have a 2003 TL that is a wonderful car with great service and great gas mileage
; it just went over 84.000 miles, and has never been in the shop except normal service and the recall on the transmissions concerning the 2nd gear lube problem.
Last Friday, April 17th the check engine light came on; I pulled the manual to check if there was something I could do to fix it. While driving Saturday the transmission began to act up and Monday on the way to the dealer I had the same symptoms many have reported in this thread. I was under the impression that I was covered under the Honda/Acura warranty extension so I left the car. Acura service called to tell me the torque converter was bad and I needed a new A/T. Told the service manager that it should be under the warranty extension and he acted like I was crazy. Said he would contact someone at Acura Regional and find what was possible. Called again later to tell me Acura would pay the first $1000 of $4200 for the A/T.
Following is my VIN number and it doesn’t seem to fit the VIN series covered. Does anyone know how I would find the transmission number series since it sounds as if my problem is the same as the warranty transmissions and mine was on the recall list for the 2nd gear problem. I really don’t want to pay $3200 as my company is probably going out of business with this economy.

i don't know about that, could depend on your particular service manager's persuasive ability. my 99 got a new one 100% goodwilled when it had 98k....
:edit: lube is probably a good idea though

update on transmission
Hi, so I met with DM and SM for about 45 minutes and price came down by 20%, with 3yr/36K warranty, much more reasonable than original price and comparable to my local places. My advice overall is be persistent but nice, and do your research. My car is 183K and 8 years old, clearly out of warranty, but engine is excellent and body/interior in very good shape, so it's worth the $3200 for the transmission and computer. I am hoping for good Karma with new transmission. Good luck to everyone!
Keep at them - 84K isn't that high, and clearly it's a design defect of the transmission. Be nicely persistent and don't get discouraged. It took me 2+ weeks of phone calls and negotiations to arrive at what I felt was a reasonable result. Client services isn't always very helpful. IMO going with service manager and district/regional manager was much more helpful.

you have to take it in and talk to the service manager about this (NOT a service writer)
I just replaced a tranny on my TL 2001 for $4200 not including tax but Acura paid like half of the cost. I was lucky though...I heard the recall that Acura did on the transmission and did some research myself (service manager didn't tell me a thing) then contacted the service manager to see if he can do anything to help me. He contacted me back and told me he knew about the recall but my car won't be eligible since mileage was too high (mine 116K)...disappointed. I did some more research and found this site http://www.hondatransmissionsettlement.com, i entered in my VIN number that it said I'm covered under this settlement so I forwarded this info to the service manager and later on he told me Acura would pay half of my cost...I was a bit disappointed since that settlement says I would be fully covered but anyway, i took it and ended up paid the other half myself...still disappointed and wondered whether or not Acura did pay all of the cost but the dealership ripped me off for the other half...
Well, I took my tl in last friday for the the rough shifting and check engine light. The dealership told me that my transmission was failing and wanted $3200 + tax to rebuild the transmission ( another $1000.00+ to replace the cat). Is $3200 too much to pay for a rebuilt 4sp tranny? I saw the link for the rebuilt transmission and am presently looking to see if there are any reputable acura shops in the houston, TX area. Let me know if you all know of any. Also, I had them do a transmission flush and it help a little. The choppy shifting is gone, but I am restricted to driving very conservatively. Hopefully this will buy me some time to decide the direction I want to go. Any advice/options would be greatly appreciated.
