Too much HEAT from RH Muffler

HI,
1999 TL3.2, the RH muffler is heating up the inside of the trunk enough to melt the carpet. I am at least the 3rd owner and it looks like this prob has been there for awhile. What would cause a muffler to get that hot? Engine has no codes and runs well. There seems to be equal exhaust gas coming out from each side so not an obvious pluggage. There is a slight exhaust smell around the car. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. Chris.

Check for leaks on the RH muffler. could be on top. cause exhaust to heat up to the trunk carpet.

Is the RH muffler sitting higher than the LH ? Either ya got a hole on the top of that side or it's riding up too close to the trunk ?
