TL 3.2 99 HID bulb gone

Yesterday I lost my right HID bulb. First it started to emit low light then it went out. I take the bulb needs replacement. So I have been searching and reading about this and I need to find out if my past owner had original HID or if he changed to aftermarket.

Question is .. How can I find out if Im using original or aftermarket kit?

Also what bulb brand you guys recommend?

Appreciate help

Why does it matter if he changed to aftermarket?
OEM are Phillips.

As for bulb recommendations check out our preferred vendors for bulbs.

replace bulbs in pairs try www.hidextra.com one of our supporters
they have an entire kit with 2 new bulbs 2 new ballast and 2 new ignitors
for only 59$!! look for coupons

they will sell you just the bulbs for a great price too, ships from California
look up bulbs by vehicle model,, you need a D2 -something in a 5000K color
35 watt system
call them and mention acurazine for special deals

if you have any moisture inside the lens- get the `kit` as your ballast are dying from water contamination

our car came with factory HID system,,,water in the housing drips out and onto the ballast below
smart people go aftermarket these days,,dealer price is insane for same old crummy part
modern= compact waterproof sealed parts make good sense,,especially with the deals we can get~!

bulb death by age = pink or purple tint at startup
death by ballast prob,,light goes out while running, have to flick switch several times to ,make one come on,,

Swap the bulb to make sure it is the bulb issue; otherwise it could be the ballast.

@NSXNEXT Well wanted to know what to buy. But A friend recommend me to get Kelvin HID based here in Miami. ANyone recognizes this brand?

@01tl4tl

HOlly crap I will check HIDextra .. and search for coupons ..

Today the bulb turned on but purpleish color then it went off..again I turn off and on and it turn on and immediately off again. I am starting to think it might be the ballast.

I think I should get the kit and replace everything so it stays the same.

Thanks all for reply.

BEFORE buying anything swap bulbs from the good side to the bad and vice versa and see if the problem follows the bad bulb or not. If it does then just buy new D2R/S bulbs

thats kris,,always the optimist!

a 99 in my opine,is way past ready for new ballast as well as bulbs
electronics wear out,,oe parts were not the best--rather, the cheapest to be found

All of us need bulbs by now based on age,,2500 hours use average life,,
and azine being a tech forum where those with problems come = trending to `full parts replacement` especially as they are now so cheap for good quality

I paid $100 for 2 high quality bulbs in the past,,swapped them for the ones included in the kit and much happier with color at 5000K (was running 6000k)

I opened one of the new hidextra ballast, its sealed in some type of epoxy material, plus each wire connector in the system has a nice o-ring and click together connection

they seem to be a major maker of the parts, or direct importer and pass the savings to us. You can buy their stuff on ebay too..probably for a bit more~

look on their website main page for coupon code,,and search online for hidextra.com + coupons
Call them for best service and say happy acurazine members sent you
often the phone person will look for special codes= for a few dollars more in your favor

I will definitely will be getting the HIDExtra kit. I would love to stay on 5000k since it looks good. I am a bit confused since I see D2R and D2S which kit is the best for my car? what are their differences.

And yes I want to upgrade the whole thing once and for all since my car is old and prob If I only fix one side chances are the old side will look bleaker compared to the new one so what the hell ... im gonna do both sides going aftermarket.! Now I have searched and searched in Google for the coupons and still no luck.. but for 59 bucks the kit.. I cant complain.

Thanks for your inputs.
specially @01tl4tl

Now I only need to figure out if I can do it or if i should hire a mechanic to do it since getting to the bulbs is a mission on these cars.

try yahoo search or look at the main page on hidextra site,,that had the 10% code right there for a long time!

or as miwa pointed out- when calling Immediately mention acurazine and they will dig thru the list of current codes to hook you up!

the r or s is the bulb base designation,,we switched partway thrugen2
get the one that comes up for your year when looked up by model
35 watt kit with 5000k bulbs $59 normal price
but CALL for best deal

you can figure this job out better than most techs,,plenty of pics for nose removal and tips in various post

Thanks!

I just got my 5000k kit for my Acura from HIDExtra... very quick shipping!. I have read some post about how to install them but I am still confused about something. There is an extra 2 cables that have black and red connectors ..skinny connectors... I dont see where to connect these? I have seen some pictures that have these cables trough the hole to the bulbs. Others I have seen with the cable connected bare? to the main bulb connector?

ANy help appreciate!

PiFive,

Did you see this thread?
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/diy-hid-convert-oem-aftermarket-clean-install-847401/

You might be referring to the main power connectors? You'll have to splice them into the old connector if you want to keep it or bypass it. Suggest solder and heatshrink instead of wirenuts as the thread illustrated. Also beware of where the ballast goes. I put it under the headlight housing for neatness but I may come to regret it some more later if things other than a carwash will short out the lights.

Installed the kit last night! It came up pretty good. I hate to say it but this aint plug and play.. Maybe for some pros out here but for a noob you gotta be ready to remove the bumper, drill a hole in the headlight housing, splice some cables and finally find a very secure and water protected place for the ballast. I was gonna remove the old ballast but I decided to leave it there so it can be use and protection for water splashing. Maybe later down the road I remove them.

Still HIDExtra kit installed and looking pretty!... tell me what you guys think.

Thanks all for help here! I love Acurazine community!
