Question Tinging & Chinging @ 65 - 80

Hi,

I have this high pitched constant ting, ting, ting, ching ching ching ching sound coming from what it sounds like under the front end of my car when I drive on the highway up to speeds of 65-70-75 etc... (I don't drive faster then 80) You might hear it a little bit when driving slower but its constant once you hit 65-70-75. Its a pretty high pitched sound. CHing, ching, ting ting or whatever you want to call it.

Took to my mechanic already, actually twice, first time he said it was front engine mounts, which I replaced he said it was metal rubbing. Obviously not the case no later then a few days it starts again. Bring in again...tightens heat plate. NOPE! not that either. I went in again explained problem in detail for 3rd time, he tells me he and his mechanic took it for a ride on highway the other mechanic could hear it but the owner of the shop could not. I told him we should go for a ride, he said ok! And just as scheduled the noise is there at 65-70-75 but this guy cannot hear it and he says this is what his other guy was talking about. But just cannot find where its coming from...ugggg. Now what? well its not a major problem so do not worry about it he said. End of story!

It concerns me a little because there is a noise coming from car that is not supposed to be there and that it might be something thats loose, or rattling and at those speeds not very comforting you know!

Have any suggestions? ideas as to what the hell this could be...its annoying to say the least

lightly touch the brakes at that spped and see if the noise goes away, if it does then it's your wear indicators on the brake pads and they need replaced.

How have you been searching- have you looked around underneath it yourself? Jack it up, put on jackstands (or a lift is even better) & w/ a good light spend some time to look around, see if anything is loose, etc.

i had a weird thing happen once when i was doing some suspension work, and some how the heat shield on my front brake rotor got bent and was ever so slightly hitting and rubbing up against the rotor. making a ting, ting, ting, ching ching ching ching sound, and only at high speed too! just bent it up and no more problem.

no they wont hit the shield--its that round plate behind all the brake parts- to keep dust and crud from hitting the back of rotor

car needs to go on the lift and bang on every part,,something in heat shield on exhaust,,bearing on wheel bad,,worn out brake pads,,,

been running low octane gas? could be engine pinging you hear!

we can only guess- this needs a pro to inspect and advise
