Timing Belt Refresh (& more)

I literally just finished my timing belt replacement activities yesterday with great success (thanks to the Acurazine crew). For the parts I used G1 Parts in Texas (near Houston) which had great service, awesome prices, and free shipping when ordered on-line. Here is my parts list that was used for my 2002 TL Premium:
Description Honda Part #
  • Automatic Adjuster 14520-P8A-A01 (for 2004 on)
  • Automatic Adjuster 14520-P8E-A01 (for 99-03)
(note: select only one of the adjusters above that is dependent upon the year of your TL)
  • Timing Belt Adjuster 14510-PGE-A01
  • AC Compressor Belt 38920-P8C-A02
  • Power Steering Pump Belt 56992-P8A-A01
  • Timing Belt 14400-P8A-A02
  • Timing Belt Idler 14550-P8A-A01
  • O-RING (8.8X1.9) 91302-GE0-000 (for oil dip stick)
  • WATER PUMP (YAMADA) 19200-P8A-A02
  • O-RING (13.0X1.9) 91345-RDA-A01 (PS Steering gasket to avoid inlet joint issues - it is a common problem)
I also flushed my transmission at the same time hence the following was ordered:
  • Filter (ATF) 25450-P7W-003
  • O-RING (12X2.4) 91301-P7W-003 (to replace washer on bottom bolt)
My total was around $350 (not bad). I purchased more than the typical timing belt kits out there to ensure that everything would be in order for the next 100k.(it's worth the investment from a piece of mind and in addition to avoiding potential issues at a later date) Keep in mind that you still need to purchase the antifreeze (I went with the Honda pre-mix) and the transmission fluid (I used the standard Honda stuff) which is another $100 investment from your local dealership that you don't want to skimp on.

(note that G1 Parts only sells Honda Parts which works well for us since all of our TL parts are universal with Honda vehicles )

Remember to not over-tighten the PS Belt (read a few posts about noisy PS pumps after changing the timing belt) or you may have another $300-$500 PS pump investment when the timing belt is changed out.

Also, don't forget to drain the antifreeze within your engine block before digging into water pump. (avoids a bigger mess when you remove the water pump) For security purposes you may want to purchase a replacement bolt and washer as my bolt turned to mush due to age and the valve not being easy to open. (DRAIN PLUG BOLT P/N 90040-P8A-A01 and DRAIN WASHER (18MM) P/N 90401-P8A-A00 - approx $15)

A few other items to consider since you are under the hood are:

  • Spark Plugs - Depending upon you mileage your spark plugs may also need changed which is approximately $60 from your local parts store. I used the standard NGK issue although some on the forum are using the new version of plugs)
  • Seafoam treatment - well worth the investment (2 cans - $12 to $20)
  • Throttle Bottle Cleaning - a great follow-up to the Seafoam treatment to ensure that everything is in order (3 bottle of Throttle Body Cleaner - DIY article available.
The results will be some significant savings on fuel economy. (at least that was the case for me from 17/18 mpg to 21/22 mpg in the city and from 22 mpg to 31 mpg on the highway (this part blew me away). Note: This savings was seen prior to changing out the timing belt at 98k miles.

Good luck as the savings is about $1k+ in labor alone (maybe more for the comprehensive refresh I did). Definitely have the PDF service manual close by as you will want to reference it along the way (my best friend for everything completed above when I wanted to confirm the approach reference on the Acurazine forum to Acura's Service specs). - found within the forum
