Mostly when I make left hand turns while accelerating I hear a fairly large thump from the left wheel area. While making 3 point turn, it's happens in reverse also but only when wheels are turned. Almost sounds like something is shifting a bit. I was told by a friend who is a mechanic that it's the ball joints. Also hapens from time to time on right side. Does his analysis sound correct to anyone?

I live in Chicago and potholes are everywhere and have 67k in 5 yrs of ownership.

 

I had similar problems, fixed when my mechanic greased the joints.
