thought I was home free...

then the tranny eatin' monster hit us...'03 TL-S <71K...try to keep it short and sweet but would like comments, opinions...thanx

no problem before thursday...VIN# was outside range, oil jet installed on recall...anyway, trying to accelerate on highway...car stutters, bucks and hesitates...ease off gas, seems OK but dash looks like pinball machine...CEL, VSA, Warning triangle..all lite up

got home, shut her down...drove again later...seemed OK, only CEL on now...but knew something not right...shifted out of D5 (never blinking) and engine seemed in neutral no matter what D#...shut it down...started it up, got home...

bottom line...took it to Acura...everyone knows the diagnosis...new tranny needed...$4250 if no assistance from Acura...told them no way...I said I'd pay for labor, nothing else...I said $1800, he said lets try $1200, even waived diagnosis fee of $125 for Me...he's going to call Acura monday with details...he'll let me know monday afternoon...can get it done outside Acura for about $2000 but feel safer with Acura...

So, sound legit?..I think so...I feel the dealer already knows what's in store or what he can offer Me but has to go through the motions...go with Acura if they do a good will thing? (where it costs less than the shop price)...otherwise the outside shop and dump it ASAP?

thanx guys...

thats about it

as for paying labor only--that would be 4 hours to remove and install unit
the acura rebuilding place does all the rest of the real labor

but you have given them a number to work towards- thats what matters- what will it take to make this customer happy
if they will meet it after 2 attempts, go for it!
comes with 3/36 that appearently only applies to you- verify that with dealer..just rumor at this point on non transferable

outside shops are always a risk- at least the place acura uses does them every day

SM only knows what has been done in the past-
and each case is different--based on your brand loyalty- use of acura service dept- being a decent person who ask nicely,, and is a member of the internets largest gathering of acura whackos,,I mean enthusiast

the regional rep works for corp- thats who makes the decision
dealer is a private biz and can cut their end,, but not the 2 grand acura wants for the trans wholesale

The '99s 4-spd 'Box is a lot more reliable than the later 5-speeds used since '00.

Just keep the tranny fluid fresh (with Honda/Acura fluid) and you'll be OK.

the recall was only to install an external oil ket kit- it goes in the normal atf filler hole on top of trans
that fixed a certain problem thats not relatred to the clutch pack wearout

No they wont give your 99 a free trans!!!
unless it has a 5 speed and it never got the kit-- and has certain heat damage from lack of that kit
then warranty replaces it--but dont count on that

look at your trans from above- blue paint on the bolt heads for big bolts that go thru trans--means warranty unit

see main tranny failure thread for more info
see about changing external filter and cleaning selenoids

replaced trans doesnt mean fixed--just rebuilt~
ck your motor mounts= especially front, pass side, and rear
ck fluid level and condition
slamming into gear can be a clutch prob or fluid clogged with crud causes excess line pressure

the front and rear mounts are fluid filled, and most years are vac boosted

look from under the car up at the mount for fluid traces,, same as blown shock does.
front often goes after 60-70kmiles, if not fixed- the side mount follows and finally the rear
Can do brake hold while quick rev in gear for front and rear,,lots of vids of testing procedure
Perform standard prybar test for side mount-its normal

And I'm guessing this could be related to the p1738, 2nd clutch pressure switch issue you posted in another thread.

is it totally under the car as in shift cable as you thought?
did you get a sample of the fluid on your finger? atf or engine oil
You might have a rear main seal leak from engine (just throwing out possible things)
remove the inspection plate under trans to engine connection, 10mm bolts hold it on
If engine rear main goes it will leak down there and drip many places
If reddish fluid thats atf and has no business being there

storing the car- are you letting it sit with some preservative like stabil or seafoam in the oil- gas --thats the ok method
or is it started and run 10 minutes,,thats worse than sitting and may lead to oil leaks from seals,,
this is general info and may not be specific to your problem

thanks for the help though guys-----i really appreciate it alot !!!

quit running it
there is moisture in the oil due to hygroscopic action--nothing short of a freeway cruise will dry it out
you are safer letting the engine just sit with the stabil in tank--and its run thru system now too.

too many possibles from rear main to oil filter seal to diagnose yet

just an update...and an attempt to steal back MY thread..LOL

heard back from dealer and Acura pretty much will pick up about $3000 which leaves Me with about $2250...3/36K warranty...brand new rebuilt?...I politely told him I couldn't afford that and if Acura wouldn't budge maybe the dealership could. I'm sure there's plenty of gravy in these prices to allow the deal to much a little towards My figure. I told him it doesn't have to be a whole lot, just a few hundred to show good faith. We'll see what happens.

So now some more questions...if I'm on the hook for the whole $2250 what's the opinion out there?...if the SA gets it below 2K, I'm sure I'll go for it...should he get a little bonus from Me?

Stay tuned for another update if interested....

Just got my car back today.. I paid 2200 for the Tranny and ECU on a 50/50 goodwill deal from Acura.

Are they asking 2250 from you? Is the ECU included? If it is, then its about the same deal I got. I went to someone suggested by a good friend and he told me 2800 to rebuild the old one.. yikes.

Good luck.

I also had them do the 105, minus plugs (I changed them 5k ago) and valve adjust (not enough money).

kaptainjack, I think you should try to have them, do more since you are at <71K, but be careful not to over reach. 2250 might be your best price, maybe?

P.

^^ thanx for the info and suggestion..I agree about over reaching...I don't want to cut the nose to spite the face...if I know Me, if they stick to their guns I'll probably go with Acura just for piece of mind (but don't tell them I said that)...outside shop said 2000/2200 so not much difference at all...thanx, again

I agree. Remember that the Acura Tranny is an updated one and should last you longer also a new ECU. Outside Shop is probably rebuilding it for about the same price of an updated one from Acura with a 3/36 piece of mind.

Check out the tranny failure thread. I just posted pics of the updated transmission.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...566833&page=79

Good luck in whatever you chose.

ecu is only changed on certain VINs
the `post 2005` made units are in the `improved design case`
Suggest rebuilt trans owners now get on a yearly 3 qt fluid change schedule

shops will use the best parts avail,,ie different clutches
acura rebuilder uses acura parts~

so the case design type is the big issue

final update for those interested...

went to AAMCO just for second opinion and reinforce My thoughts of going Acura, regardless...AAMCO quoted Me $2500-3500 (sure it leans to higher end) with only 1yr/12K..additional $700-800 for 3yr/36K...when I pulled out of AAMCO car was much worse...D5 flashing (wasn't before), VSA lite (wasn't before), warning triangle lite (wasn't before)...engine revving/late gear shift...downshift with a thud at stop...JEZZZ!!

brought it right to Acura...$2250 for trans, $300 for ECU, 3yr/36K warranty...somewhat peace of mind...PRICELESS!!!

thanx all for listening....LET'S GO RANGERS!!!!
