Subframe fixing

new user here and looking for help with subframe help. The passenger side common rot was discovered when I did all ball joints tie rods and sway bar end links. I'm currently a welder. Tig mig and stick. And have access to metal whatever I need. To me it seems easy to grab some 1/8 plate and form a peice to same contour as what was there and weld it together. It's currently not broken or rusted through completely. So going to mock up a peice to tie it all together. Shop quoted me 700 to do it all and seems high when I can do it myself. Any problems come to mind with this procedure? Am I missing something at all? If it was broke I would be more concerned but as of now it's holding. Thanks for help and all the information people provide on here. It has been a massive help.

Some have reported rust damage where the AC condensation drips on the subframe. The affected subframe is usually replaced.

It might actually be easier to just replace the sub-frame with a used one in good condition.

Personally i would pick up a used one and replace it. There is no telling what type of rot is on the inside where you cant see. If you are positive its just in that area you could weld on some pieces like you mentioned, but you will need to seal them up good so as they wont weld or the subframe area where you welded, and again, you wont know how bad if any in other areas inside are rusted. If you do weld on pieces, make sure to use some weld thru primer first.

the restorers nightmare,,,,, initial inspection/customer says its just a little rust!
See any car fix-up show on tv now,, they end up cutting half the car out after that little area grew and grew

Corrosion = cut the whole area free and visit the junkyard

Stack the race car into the wall at turn 11 = cut off the front and visit the junkyard!

i went through this exact same thing on my 02 type s last year.. you don't need the entire subframe (unless its totally rotted) I ended up just buying the front beam part from texas.. it was MINT.... However the removal of the old subframe according to my mechanic was no walk in the park.. took him pretty much 4 days and thats with a lift and every imaginable tool at his disposal..... the part I bought was $500.. good luck guys

Part #1 is what you need
