strange sound from front drivers side

Hi, I have a 2000 Acura TL 3.2 with a strange sound in the drivers front side - it sounds like a woo woo woo woo sound and gets louder as I accelerate. I thought it might be a wheel bearing but checked and it's ok as far as I can tell. It starts around 15mph and it gets to sounding like an oscillating type sound and as I go faster it sounds faster. If I'm going down the road at say 60mph in Drive and put the trans in neutral it goes away - if I try to match the RPM when in neutral the sound is still gone(so not engine related I think). I looked the CV boots and they are fine(not cracked). The car has about 158K miles and had the trans replaced under warranty years ago(it didn't really need it). Any ideas?

thanks for any insight!

Tony

Welcome Mantis007.

You might have answered the question to your problem. "When you put the car in neutral the problem goes away" Check your tranny fluid and if it is anything but red in color it needs to be changed as soon as possible. If it is low add enough to fill to the middle of the dip stick.

Note: Use only Honda DW-1.

Hmmm, one would think that if it's a suspension or steering component going bad..... the offending noise would'nt silence if the tranny was put into "neutral". Very strange scenario !!! Especially since ya say the noise is noticeable on only the driver's side. Ya may need some professional advice if it's nothing apparent.

start with testing the front and rear motor mounts for vac leak and visable fluid leak
front and rear are vac boosted and fluid filled
inspect pass side motor mount
inspect remaining transmission mounts

ever change the atf? it may be running the old stuff- dw1 is a few years in use now.

if you got a trans under warranty during a visit to shop for recall install of oil jet kit- and it had blue heat damage to the gear or shaft= trans was replaced for free
Later they had warranty on clutch wearout- it would slip in gears like a worn out clutch of manual trans cars- that was good for 7 years 9 months from new
If acura gave you a trans at no charge there was definitely something wrong with it, many people tried and failed to get a freebie

new fluid would be a wise investment
