Steering Column Interlock Microswitch?

Is there such an animal? I have had 4-5 episodes where car will not start (light come on, but does nothing, no turnover)...similar to when you try and start your car (automatic) with car in gear (even though it is in the "P" position). In the past, depressing break pedal would allow the car to turn over and start. Just yesterday, same problem happened, only this time, depressing break pedal does not get the car to start. Is there a switch that tells the starter that yes, car is in park, go ahead and fire it up? Battery is 1 year old. I assume it is not the alternator, perhaps could be the starter (although, not sure why in the past, depressing pedal would allow the car to start, whereas now that trick does NOT work).

Please offer suggestions, and potential cost to cure-
Thx
