Spark Plugs

Does the 02 Tl-S use some special spark plugs?

I was at the parts store (napa) and was looking to pick up a set of plugs. The guy quoted me almost 15.00 per plug.

I have never had to pay that much for plugs before, so it was a shocker that what I thought was going to be 30-40 bucks is almost double that.

Does this sound reasonable?

you want NGK Iridium IX plugs

There are hi tech metal and super fine single wire electrode'
Engineered to match our special individual coil per plug ignition

should cost just under 7 bucks each at kragen or similar store- just look in phone book for who carries NGK- get a 1 dollar tube of plug anti sieze as well
Accept no subsitutes!!!

laser refers to the method used to weld the electrode on- thats all, but it sounds cool eh!!
We use the straight up Iridium IX for your year tl
should be just under 7 bucks each- kragen or similar store- anyone wants to sell you different is not familiar with the TL

they will last 100k - the ngk platinums were stock and scheduled 100k - iridium is a better metal in every type testing- used to be only for race cars and airplanes.
Many of us change plugs at 60-70 k miles just to get max performance and mileage from the engine. Its not like you will be changing plugs every year---do it once and you wont really want to do it again~
There is a DIY on the job- simple- just have to be methodical and very gentle with the coils- treat them like lightbulbs

The biggest difference is that the laser series plugs have a platinum disk laser welded onto the ground electrode. Laser iridium plugs have an iridium disk welded onto the center electrode, laser platinum plugs have a platinum disk welded onto the center electrode. Iridium ix plugs have an iridium disk welded onto the center electrode, but no platinum disk welded onto the ground electrode. NGK says 60k on the ix, 100k on the laser platinum or iridiums. I've pulled many single platinum plugs [no special ground disk], and they typically show no wear or very slight wear. For this reason, and the fact that NGK markets the ix line as a "serious enthusiasts" plug, it's what I'm gonna use. I'd bet they'll go 100k easy.

multi coils may be common now, but 10 years ago when these cars were designed, they were not.
The correct plugs for the TL use a single super fine size electrode wire, not some bulky multi pronged monster for other cars systems

No they won't go 100k. I changed my original platinum plugs at 80k and although the tip looked as good as the new ones, the car ran better with the new plugs. Every post here says the same thing about the Iridium plugs. (they don't last as long as the original Platinum) but cost less. Most agree a little better performance.
