Should I changed my transmission fluid?

My wife's 2000 tl has 170,000. We bought the car with around 70,000 miles. not sure if it had ever had a fluid change before then. My question is, since there are so many miles now should I even bother changing the fluid. I hear from people that it will make the transmission worse. Every now and then it will take longer than normal to shift gears so I'm assuming it's just a matter of time before it craps out. I just wanted to try and prevent it from happening. should i change or not change, that is the question?

You basically put 100k more miles onto the car since you had it. Changing the transmission fluid is part of normal maintenance so I believe you should change it, especially knowing the 2G TL is notorious for it's tranmission failures...

holy cow 170k...i'd do a drain and fill only...drain once and fill once. then do it again after a few weeks. can't be too careful with these things. do it yourself...don't let a shop do it. you can make sure you do it right - plus it's really easy and cheap.

drain once and fill once.

i'm in a similar boat as the o.p. of the thread. my question is what's the point/advantage of drain & refilling the same fluid?

That would be the same as putting your old oil back in-

Clean the drain plug magnet too.

Drain/fill. Drive through all of the gears. Come back, drain/fill. Drive through all of the gears, and then drain/fill one last time.

Drain/fill 3x total, and you'll have new tranny fluid thoughout the car, totally eliminating the old fluid.

Oh, BTW, DEFINITELY change out your fluid. ASAP.

i wouldn't do the X3 on this particular case, just the drain and fill once.
