Should I buy this 2003 TL?
Should I buy this 2003 TL?
It's an S type with 130k on it and he claims it is perfect inside and out for $1990. The catch? The only parts that are not perfect is he claims the transmission needs a solenoid pack. Is it possible this is the only problem or do these typically lead to more? I have seen some folks claim they can remove the solenoids and clean the screens and everything is good after that. I have also seen people claim that if the screens are clogged you are losing part of the transmission anyway. So I guess the real questions are is it possible the car will be perfect if those are replaced and/or is it possible to make it perfect by cleaning the solenoid screens or does this just mean more problems? Is there anything else I should be considering? I can buy these solenoid packs and have them put in at a mechanics school for free so any feedback would be appreciated.
type s with 130k for 1990!? is the car fucked up cosmetic wise? otherwise that's a steal. The transmissions are known for being so shitty, if anything you can always save up for a new Accord v6 tranny which is much stronger and I believe just bolts up like ours.
I think it's worth it even if you spend an extra $2k for the Av6 tranny.
You can clean out the solenoids which should help out the wear of the tranny, but it will EVENTUALLY die.

I would say it is at least new, to excellent, to very good inside and out as far as cosmetics go. Certainly no less than that. So if I hear you right you are saying that the screen clean will probably keep it running for awhile and it is probably a better bet to do that and save for a transmission than to put a new solenoid pack in because there are probably problems with the tranny anyway. Realistically, what would you estimate the amount of miles I could squeeze out of it if I go the clean the screen route? 5k, 50k? I have no idea.
It's really up in the air, because some members have gone up to 200k whereas others have had theirs crap out before 100k.
BUT you will notice symptoms right away. EX: When shifting the car revs higher and then engages rather than smoothely(usually occurs when trying to accelerate fast). One way I knew mine was going to crap on me was when at a stop the whole car would jerk when in (D)rive.
Once you start seeing symptoms just be ready to replace it.
See if you can possibly talk the guy down in price. Either way you will spend around 4k, which is a great deal for a pretty awesome car, especially since it's a type s.
If you do get the car and you come across problems just google your problem and add "acurazine" to the search and you will eventually find someone who has gone thru the same problem.
Anyways welcome

The seller is apparently admitting to some tranny issues. IMO, if it was only a faulty solenoid pack....it would have been replaced, and the asking price of the car would be higher.
If seriously interested, have the tranny evaluated and proceed accordingly. If the car is genuinely nice, $2000 spent on a replacement '06>'07 Accord V6 AT would give ya a solid car. It's your gamble !!!
