Shifter Cable Snapped Or Needs Adjustment?

Hey guys,

So tonight we pulled into a parking lot and put the car in reverse...or so we thought. The car still moved forward while the shifter was in the R position. We turned off the car and it didn't want to turn on, so I looked under the car and I saw a cable of some sort kind of loose. So I moved it around and we tried to start it and finally the car turned back on and by moving it around I was able to get it in Reverse. Is there a way that I can tell if it just needs adjustment or if it really is snapped?

I also noticed that when I shift gears from inside the car the selector appears to change, but every now and then the D4 will blink along with one gear remaining on. I go back underneath the car and there is this plastic tube looking thing coming out of the transmission where the shift cable goes. It looks to be too far out. I'm assuming that since it goes out this far that may be what caused the plastic cover that goes on the shifter cable and attaches to the transmission to break. It was forced off by that tube.

I do have a Haynes manual, but hope that I can find some help here also.

Thank you!!

do you own jackstands or ramps- the answer is under the car, I am guessing based on your words that you can get under the car safely- with a repair manual by your side
Its all about matching the pics and looking for loose or missing bolts to brackets cables etc

If not have it TOWED to a local (small ad in yellow pages) Honda/acura-import shop that knows acura
or a private trans shop, not brand name with its corporate operating system of replace all parts!!!
the flashing D4 is not good, a scan of the codes will give us more info and it can be a false code with any luck!

the trans shop or repair place will have a code reader, or local parts stores do it free (except Ca.) IF it were drivable
whats the trans fluid look like color wise and smell? burnt toast smell? do you ever change the atf? use Honda atf only?

I know the transmission needs to have the fluid changed, but I don't think that's the reason it doesn't let me shift. The cable from where it comes out of the transmission looks to be too far out, so I don't know if it just needs to be adjusted or replaced. The Haynes manual that I have doesn't have a very detailed picture of that part of the transmission.

Thank you!!

Do you have a link to this? I have looked for this before, but could never find it. That's why I chose to purchase the Haynes manual.

Thank you!!

Thank you for the link!! I went under the car today and removed the shifter cable access cover and noticed that the little metal piece that it attaches to wasn't forward all the way. I moved the cable and no change, so I figure that means it's snapped. I ended up moving the metal piece all the way forward with my finger, which I assume means it's in park. I also have left the cover off at this point since I am going to replace the cable, so I get back in the car and start it to confirm it is in Park and let off the brake and the car starts moving forward, but when I pushed the gas a little it still revved it just didn't move any faster...just kept creeping at the same speed which I thought was a little strange. The D4 light is also blinking...I have read that a constant D4 light means the transmission is on it's way out, but it didn't do this until the shift cable snapped. Any ideas? We drove it all the way home when this first started with no D4 light blinking.

Thank you for all your help!!

Hopefully once ya have the shift cable replaced, all will be well.
Reset the PCM by removing the #13 (7.5A) fuse for the Clock Back-up, which is located in the passenger side's interior lower fuse panel. Replace the fuse after a minute and maybe the blinking light will go out ?
