Shift Stuck at Park

My shift is stuck at parking. I can't move it unless I stick my key in the little hole to move the gear to neutral then start my car. I already replaced the brake light switch and 2 light bulbs, except for the high mount brake light. I checked the fuses and they look fine. What else can I try to fix it before I go to an auto shop?

Welcome Alchemisthoc !!!
Did ya try adjusting the brake switch after replacing it ?
If that doesn't work, could be something with the shifter mechanism ?

3.2TLc, yeah, I did. I tried twisting it around.

TLer trash, the brake light bulbs does work when I turn on my lights at night time. I'm not sure about the high mount brake light bulb though. When I press the brake paddle though, none of the lights turns on.

If your rear brake lights don't light up when you apply the brake pedal downward....then the switch is not adjusted properly. Check some past threads for adjustment procedure. If that doesn't help ya may have a wiring or connector issue. Make sure that you have the right bulbs.

Does the horn work? If not, there's a fuse that supplies the horn and brake lights that's prob blown.

I think I twisted the new switch in too much, haha, it won't go out! I'll look around for switch adjustment. Thanks, 3.2TLc.

Tosh, yeah, the horn does work.

If ya didn't mess with the brake pedal's height adjustment pushrod, all ya need to do is loosen the brake switch's locknut and then once it's screwed into the pedal arm's pad, just back it off 1/4 turn. Ya may need to tweak it a bit to make sure that the rear brake lamps go on and off.

Hey guys, experiencing the car's tranny shifter stuck in park.....along with a no start situation. Have tried the over-ride to neutral, but still only getting a single click and what sounds like relays activating when attempting to start the car.

So, while the car's presently disabled and parked at a local mall's parking lot.....what would've caused this situation to happen ? Does anybody have any ideas or suggestions ?

The 2000 TL with 180k has been running very well prior to this incident. It's very strange that this happened all of a sudden with absolutely no fore-warning signs at all. The battery and alternator are only about a year old. Have power to everything else.....except the starter. What should be first on the list of things to check ? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help !

For an update and future reference :
The tranny shifter ended up being ok ....once a new starter was installed in the car.
