Shaking While Idle
Shaking While Idle
Just finished reading through some other threads on car shake. Wanted to get additional input on it so when I head over to shop I can give them (hopefully) a general idea.
Recently started to notice (only happening 1 - 3 times a month) this year that when I am stopped at a red light my car will start to shake. Seems similar to what others have described.
Symptoms and observations:
- shakes only when applying the brake on D or R
- no issues on P or N
- RPM doesn't spike when shake occurs, remains idle
- when applying the throttle shake goes away
- car drives fine in city/highway, only issue is this idle shake when stopped
- recently changed timing belt, water pump, and tranny in Aug - Sep 2011 with no issues noticed
(transmission mounts replaced but not the side/motor mount)
- have recently used some cylinder and injector cleaner
- currently at 177 xxx km (110 xxx miles)
Possible causes/fixes:
- EGR cleaning?
- Sparkplugs?
- Motor mount?
Thoughts and comments appreciated. Thanks.

Our TL is having similar symptoms. Plugs didnt fix it. Havent tried EGR cleaning but Im guessing that wont fix it.
Im almost positive its at least one of the motor mounts (front/rear, probably not the sides). I have the diagnostic procedure listed in the service manual but just havent gotten around to trying it.
I suppose its possible it might be the transmission mount(s) since it started around the time we had the tranny replaced (by the Acura dealer, no less).

the dealer tech tends to notice if a car in for trans needs any mounts- its easy/cheaper to replace them and the front motor mount with trans removed
in general: the front fails somewhere after 60kmiles and goes unnoticed- the passenger side takes extra load then fails
the front and rear are fluid filled and vac boosted = so failure causes multiple problems ie: mystery vac leak
Its easy to ck them
egr clogging possible- needs full system cleanout every 75kmiles
plugs are ngk iridium or platinum? less than 70kmiles on them?
must use the correct 8 buck each plugs -nothing else works right
how did you run the cleaner? what brand etc
seafoam is the awesome way to get instant cleaning of important parts, then a can in half tank of gas reaches everything else
remember to clean TB air plate!
If you used a small vac line to induct cleaner- you probably only got one bank of cyls.
must use the master vac port at TB to get full coverage!
cleaning one side of the engine causes issues

My front and rear mounts have been replaced, but my side wasn't. I assume it was OK 7 months ago..
Cleaner that was suggested to me was 'Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant..'. Put in around 6-8oz with about a quarter left in the tank then topped it off. I'm going to check the spark plugs today. Haven't done the EGR cleaning yet (thought it might not be the issue since rpm's seem fine. Guess it doesn't hurt to do anyway?)
Did a quick test on side mount while applying the brake and hitting the throttle. Torqued quite a bit appareantly.. maybe this is the issue?
Thanks!
