Replacement Tranny lifespan - high mile TL?
Hi. New to Forums. Bought my 2002 TL-S new in March 2001 (one of first shipped in SoCal). Best car I've ever owned - and longest.
My first tranny went out at 53,000.
Second tranny went at 114,000. Honda replaced again for no charge.
Car now has 168,000. It runs and drives like new. Best car I've ever owned - but I can't help but wonder if I'm on borrowed time. It is not showing any of the subtle signs, but I don't want the first sign to be a failure.
Anyone had experience with a high-mile TL and replacement tranny? I'd like to drive it another year. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

My tranny pretty much just went out on me today at 231k miles. Started shuddering harshly and slipping badly on the way to the gas station. Was afraid I wasnt going to make it home. Also, the RPMs revved up crazy while accelerating without me going anywhere. I'm afraid if I drive it anymore it's gonna completely crap on me while on the freeway and I'm planning to 6 spd swap it anyway so there'd be no point in replacing or fixing the old tranny since I'll be putting in a new one anyways.
Before that I got the car with 186k miles and the tranny had been replaced under warranty at 184k miles. I took great care of it to make it last as long as possible. It ran really great with the replacement one for me up until recently. It could have been the fact that I drive it on a daily commute about 60 miles per day 4 days a week just to work. Counting running errands and misc driving I'd say I put 300 miles a week on it. Also changed the tranny fluid at 220k miles which helped the shifts even better and it ran smoother. Dont know if that wouldve been a factor to it failing after about 46k more miles since the replacement but at about 230k miles I got CEL code P0740 for the Torque Converter Malfunction. Then about 1k miles later it got worst and is pretty much done and how it is now. But that's just my experience.

the car miles isnt the prob, its the quality of the trans rebuild
Change 3.4 qts of atf every year is about all you can do to prolong its life
maybe replace the external filter for good measure

I have a 2001 TL and am on my third tranny. First one went out at 48K, second at 60K and third at 115K. I now have 183K and this last one seems to be doing just fine. Acura has replaced mine each time and have done so under warranty so no cost to me. I found that if you keep your records and talk with them reasonably they have cooperated quite well since there was a design problem with the 2001's not sure about 2002's. I too bought mine new (5 miles on it) back in December of 2000 and have been really pleased with everything on it. A little inconvenience for the 3 tranny's but not a big deal so far. I would say to just change the fluid and filter at the recommended intervals and if it does go out plead your case. I do know of one instance that they were wanting to charge about $500 labor but was covering the tranny cost. Still not a bad deal if it is still out there.

100k+ on my tranny (Post 2005 Design) with no issues.
If you don't have any of the indications, it's not going to completely fail out of nowhere. The only way that will happen is if the second gear problem comes into play, and it has never happened to any members here. Plus, I'm sure you got the recall done when you changed the tranny.
