Rebuilt tranny question

I just had my trans replaced by Acura at 93k miles. I've read here that the problem with the trans stems from poor fluid flow and heat buildup. Does anyone here know what mods Acura made on the rebuilt replacements to make them more reliable? I would really like to know what has or has not been done differently from the original. Thanks!

i think they changed some fluid passages to get more flow past the 2-3 clutch pack. not sure if they really reinforced it more than that. i presume they also integrated a fix to whatever the oil jet was supposed to fix (2nd gear chipping?)

I would suggest reading the trans failure thread.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I spent about an hour weeding through posts last night looking for an answer to this particular question. Maybe missed it.

Hell, I get a headache if I read the transmission thread for longer than 5 minutes

In short there is no real specifics other than enlarged passage ways and different steels and friction plates for 3rd gear.

in addition to enlarged pass ways they also changed out the old computer with another reprogramed one, this new computer is horrible, tranny does not shift the same, feels less power.

Thanks for the info, I was hoping they didn't just throw another of the same old problem tranny in there. Nice to know they have at least tried to help the situation. Now the only question is do I keep the car past 100k miles or unload it before it costs me big $$$.

There is NO reason you should feel less power. They did NOT detune the motor. They changed the shift point and the way it shifts to make it shift faster to produce less heat.

Agree. The replacement tranny and reprogrammed PCM will not make the car less powerful. The car will shift differently, but by no means slower than before.

Shift points mean everything when it comes to acceleration. But more than likley its all in your head. Either or, im sure whatever it was that they did was for the better and not for worse. Lets say you did lose a very small barely noticable amount of acceleration, for a longer lasting transmission. I dont mind even losing a few HP for an outcome of a reliable tranny.

But they didint make the shift points lower, they changed teh way it shifted to make them faster. You loose less with a faster shift.

There you have it. I can see that improving the performance of the transmission.

How has the relaibility of the rebuilt tranny's been?

My '02 is ready to pick up. First replacement trans @ ~75k miles.

Shifts on my new tranny take much longer than my old one (though, of course, they are much smoother). Is there any way to make them faster to prolong transmission life? (I'm talking 2500 rpm shifts, full throttle shifts are much faster)

yea they say it was for the better, however this makes number 4 for me, 3 were paid for by Acura brand new and this last one I paid for myself brand new, believe me its not in my head, I believe that I have driven my car long enough and had more than my share of trannys put in to know the difference. The acura tech that works on my vehicle also noticed that there is a big difference in how veh laggs on acceleration.

acura probably did it to discourage you to drive it hard

Thats probably more a situation of the trans and not the ECU. I had 5 and none of mine made it any slower. Mine actually was faster after the new ECU (proven bu drag times)

Your friend is probably right about the brand new A/T . According to the service manager at the Acura dealer that replaced my A/T .Acura only replace the defective parts during the rebuilt , so it's a mix between new and old parts in your replaced A/T ....

acura, service advisors, etc etc etc are all full of crap. Seems as though you can never get a straight answer that lines up with everyone else's answers. My suggestion is you get an extended warranty, and renew it every time. It's what im doing till im halfway paying off the car.
