I was told to change my factory stereo in my 00 TL it was all or nothing. If I want to change mt head unit I must change all factory speakers. The guy said something about how Bose used lower frequency,so any after market speakers wouldn't sound good. How true is this?Someone also told me that the factory alarm also runs through the factory head unit.Is that true as well?
You were told WRONG. You can change just the HU. On the TL the BLOZ amp is built into the hu. Removing that you also bypass the shitty EQ. No the alarm isnt run thru the HU either. The factory speakers will sound better but they are shit to begin with so dont expect great sound. You can very easily add aftermarket speakers and make the car sound great. The one thing you will loose is the factory sub, unless you give it a new remote turn on lead AND send a new audio signal to its amp located just behind the back seat.
No Navigation.Yeah the factory speakers are shit but I can live with them longer than my out dated factory h.u.I can't play burned cds or run any type of Ipod or mp3 without a fm modulator.
Speakers dont cost much these days either, Found some good deals over our pal Internet (Kenwood Speakers = 49 bucks!). Tough I dont recommend Installing AFMKT Speakers and use the OEM Sub, Sounds wayy off... Better live without it for a while than trying to Use it on AFMKT H.U.
Anything is better than POS OEM Speakers.

I know for a FACT that you can install any aftermarket HU and get it to work with the original speakers and keep the factory sub, although you loose the sub controls you had before. I did this about 7 years ago, and I am still using my factory speakers. Read around this site, I'm sure the instructions are still out there.
Fstty is right, the process involves splicing a few wires behind the HU to get the amp behind the rear seat to turn on with the stereo. You find the remote power wire that runs from the amp behind the seat to behind the HU and splice it to something that powers with the stereo. Then I think I found the wires going to the sub from the old equalizer box (you will probably leave this in the dash as it is a separate box found above the factory HU) and splice these two wires to an audio plug (buy it at radio shack) that goes into the back of your new HU in the 'sub out' jack. It's super easy once you locate the correct wires, but any Best Buy installation guy will swear up and down that it is impossible. I guess they would sell less speakers if they didn't say that...

I just remembered that you are looking for two blue wires with yellow stripes. One is the correct wire, the other is not. Buy some of those 'splicing tap clips' so that you don't go through cutting and splicing wires till its all f'ed up. Just read around, you will get it.
No matter what you read, everything can be done from inside the dash. You don't need to run new audio cables, buy all new speakers or amps, or loose the original sub. Don't forget to unplug the factory equalizer, or it will sound like crap. You now owe the internet $400.

Like I said, it's been years since I did mine. I think the EQ is where you find the Sub speaker lines if my memory is correct. I THINK you have to disconnect the cable going from the EQ to find these wires.
