Post OEM verses OE Axles

Since there are various threads I found with questions about OE axles, here is what I found out about the EMPI axles.

I called to question the distributor about the EMPIs not having the dampner on them like the OEMs do. There response was that the EMPIs are solid shafts and the OEMs are hollow shafts.

While this sort of makes sense, there's no data to compare the pros and cons . . . other than OEMs are very expensive compared to what you can get OEs for.

I have read of exactly one problem with an empi axle on a mechanic's forum. In this case, they went with oe on the second try. I have personally installed a lot of empi, napa, and carquest axles, and they have all been fine. Empi's been making cv joints, boots, etc. since air cooled vw days or earlier. It's common for any/all of the aftermarket to not be exact copies of oe. This might include shaft diameter, boot design, lack of a damper ring, etc. All this applies to NEW aftermarket axles, NOT REMAN..... way too many problems.

What's with all the old guy posts . . . I'll be 50 in a few weeks . . . it's not often that I'm the youngest.

It just goes to prove you don't have to give up tinkering with cars as you get older, and I've also learned that you don't have to grow up.
