mysterious mpg?

Hello all im a newbie and i searched but i want answers related directly to my problem. I just got a 1999 TL about 4 months ago. It has 125,000 miles and the tranny slips when cold. when warmed up it is noticeably better. BUT i am not asking about the tranny. It is my MPG! I do majority city driving and i average 13MPG!! whats up with that. A full tank gets me 185-200 miles. When i got the car i did a tune up, changed oil, cleaned egr(glad i did),cleaned throttle body and intake manifold, and seafoamed. One other thing is i beilieve my valves need adjusted could this make up for my lost mpg??? or do you have any other suggestions? thanks

Welcome to Acurazine.

There may not be any 'lost MPG" to recover. The TL gets very poor fuel economy in city driving. That may be what is going on since the majority of your driving is city driving.

In any case, there are many, many threads discussing TL fuel economy and strategies for improving it.

did u change the spark plugs? and what kind did u use? city driving kill mpg on our cars. and a leaded foot will greatly decrease the mpg.

Well TL take lot of gaz in town and the tranny slips will contribute to the low mpg .
Rep up more often then normal to have the same acceleration.

I think you will find that cleaning the intake manifold will help. 0104 should chime in and let you know about seafoaming. That would be my suggestion.

clean out your egr port(s), seafoam (x3), change air filter, dump some fuel injector cleaner in your gas tank, and get some shell v-power gasoline. check out our DIY section and drive like grandma. good luck.

The good news is that the TL will get amazing mileage in pure highway driving. I've hit 32-33 MPG with all highway driving in my 1999 TL. Others have reported similar numbers.
