There's no special hacks or modifications, it just depends on what CD-Rs you use. The ones I bought are from Taiyo Yuden (Click Here for more information about them). These CD-Rs are only made in Japan and they are the only ones that works for my car.
I bought this one on Ebay.
It's my second time buying these TY CD-Rs and they haven't cause me any problems. It burns fine, music plays great, no skipping, and no reading lags. Although I can't tell if these are really TYs, I don't have a program to identify the CD-Rs. My Nero CD/DVD speed program can't read it for some reason. I can't find any other CD-Rs that work with the stock TL deck.

Unfortunatley, what works for your particular CD player may not work for others as there are unit to unit differences between the OEM head units used in the 1999-2001 TLs.
And you might even find that your next batch of TY CD-Rs doesn't work as there can be batch to batch variatons for the exact same brand of CD-Rs. This has happened to other forum members.
This is one of the most discussed topics in the history of the second generation TL forums.
My 1999 TL had trouble with CD-Rs and I installed the OEM six CD player used in the 2002-2003 TLs. That worked out great as that unit has no trouble with burned CDs.

Id make sure the radio is from a TL and not a CL. They look identical for the most part but dont work. The CL radio doesnt have a Amp built in. That may be your issue
