Mileage problems

I have a 99 TL with 115,000 miles on it. I am getting less than 17-18 miles to the gallon. Is this normal? If not, any suggestions on how I can improve my mileage?

Thanks very much.

Check air filter, and if you haven't changed the spark plugs, then that would be something you might want to do.

What kind of tires are you using?

Some sticky tires kill mileage.

What's your driving habits? City/Highway? Do you have a heavy right foot?

When was the last time you had a tuneup?

thanks

Thanks so much for the nice welcome. I have yet to change my spark plugs. I actually try not to rev the car above 2500-3000 rpm unless I have to get ahead of someone quickly. Who knew the tiptronic comes in handy for easy driving.

The last time I had a tune up was about 6-8 months ago and I'm driving on stock tires.

Anymore suggestions? Thanks again

Check your air filter first .!!!!!Is your car idle fine ??
Tire pressure is very important , try to keep them at 33PSI .

I will check my air filters once this nasty weather passes over Maryland. I need to get new tires soon anyway because mine are balding so I'll keep the pressure up as usual. My car idles oddly actually. It tends to jump up and down between 1000 and 500 rpm and sometimes it even stalls. It feels very uneven and clunky at idle actually.

Hope that brings more suggestions

idle sounds like a Idle Air Control Valve thats going.

As for the mileage, is it mostly city? hwy? mix?

Thank again. i'll check the idle noise and it is a mix of driving, predominately more rural roads though so I'd say more on the highway type.

Is it normal for most TL's of that year and mileage to have such bad mileage and what not? Thanks so much.

Remember in the winter car will consume more gaz ( to warm up , electrical load ,
heating inside car ..etc ) Right now in Montreal with -15 oC , my mileage is around
18-19 mpg .

When I was on campus, I only drove to and from classes, and I got only about 10 mpg on one tank. It was pretty bad. Nothing wrong with the car, though. Just winter driving.

Not only that, but winter gas.

you live in MD so maybe you just stuck idling during traffic jam all of the time that may be one of the factors of poor gas mileage

Well I just checked my air box and spark plugs, which were replaced in november actually. I am not normally stuck in traffic but it is fairly cold down there.

My engine seems to be running rich. My car reeks of gas more than my father's Lamborghini Countach with no cats so I'm assuming that's not normal. Any other suggestions? thanks

Dude, if it smells like gas more than a Countach does, then I can only guess that your car has a fuel leak.

smelling gas fuels is not a good thing at all. are you sure it is gas that you are smelling? if so bring it to a mechanic and have them check it, that is not good at all. BTW 17-18mpg in the winter with mixed driving isn't awful. I have never experienced mileage that low, but I mostly drive on interstates. go to your mechanic and have them check for a fuel leak.

werd.

just putting around town im lucky if i see the 200 mile mark before the last 8th a tank.

i would run some injector cleaner through it and some new plugs and filters. switch to synthetic oil which will help slightly. thats all i can think of off the top of my head.
