Maintenance light flashing

I'm a relatively new TL owner so I have a question. I have a 99. When I started the car up today the Maintenance required light was flashing. It flashed 10 times then went out. It does not stay on , just when I start up the car. I dont think I noticed it flashing before. Is this normal ?
My brakes are quite squeaky. Is this an indicator that the pads are low ? can I TL sense this ?

Please let me know ASAP.
