We could only conclude that it was a safety feature. However, mine didn't do that when the driver side ballast went out. And our cars are both '03 models. It's weird. The only difference is that mine is a Type-S and his is a Premium.
This doesn't quite match up though. He put known working bulbs in (i assume that the oem bulbs worked when you replaced them for aftermarket, as an upgrade.?) That would be nice, but his bulbs are fine. So after your friend replaced the bulb it all worked well? I have disconnected mine with no such results. As have the other hundred members with bad bulb how to ?s and no reports of funkiness like this.

its not the bulbs or the ballasts, both have been switched side to side.

the saga continues... they replaced the headlight switch and another switch block now my headlights are fine, and they were fine before i brought it to them, it would just blow the 15 amp fuse under the hood under the small light heading.

now that they replaced both switches my vanity lights work but my dash illumination lights still don't work.

they are still playing off the fact that the headunit is the problem, which i doubt cause it still works fine and the illumination feature dims it when the lights are turned on.

so we will see what happens. any other ideas would be awesome.

so did this end up being a bulb or a ballast?

its weird as hell cause i couldn't get the headlights to work right at all when it first happened, then i got every thing to work except the interior dash lights and vanity lights.

now every thing is working except the dash lights.

I had the same problem when my ballast went out due to a leaking headlight. I thought it was odd at first too.
