Low Beam Ballast Issue - No More D2R Kits?? Halp! - 2003 TL Type-S
Hi Team,
The passenger low beam on my 2003 TL Type-S is working intermittently - replaced the bulb, same problem. I believe I'm experiencing the standard OEM ballast issue.
I'm reading tons of helpful threads about installing aftermarket kits. Unfortunately, the most reliable sources for purchase (HIDextra, Retrofit Source) either don't have D2R kits or don't have them in stock.
Here's where I'm lost: Do I need D2R specifically for low beams? I've seen recommendations for the 9006 kits, but it was my understanding that 9006 is for fog lights, 9005 is for high beams, and D2R is for low beams. To make it more confusing, the Retrofit Source doesn't seem to have a 9006 kit either; only 9005, and recommends it for high beams.
On top of all that, do I need the wire harness? Capacitor Link? Carbon Fiber brackets? What parts do I buy separately at the hardware store?
If it makes a difference, I'm in Canada and have daytime running lights. They were being problematic a few months back until I resoldered the DRM module. (If I'm not mistaken, they're not connected to the low beams anyway.)

Replace low beams with only D2R bulbs.....but your problem is with your ballast or igniter. Buy a set of these off ebay for about $55 and replace both the ballast and igniter on that headlight. You DO NOT need relay harness or conversion kits. I went through the same issue and did weeks of research before just replace the ballast and igniter switch on both headlights, and that solved the issue.
These will fit your car I believe. Just plug in your car in amazon garage to double check
I swap out my HID to LEDs as 1 of my HID are not working. I know it was a ballast issue and didn't want to spend my time taking out the bumper and taking out the headlight. So I just tap some wires and added the LED bulb. Its similar or if not brighter than the HID. I also swap out my foglight with LED and super bright too.

I purchased D2R bulbs in Feb 2017 and I just checked their site and they still offer them. I also recommend HIDextra, they stand by their warranty. I had an issue where i installed the ballast in a not so great location that water may have gotten to it, I called them up, left a message, and the next day they returned my call and told me they already sent out a new ballast. GREAT WARRANTY

Hey so I'm having the same issue, the bulb on passenger side is intermittently turning on and off. Did u just replace the bulb or did u purchase a whole led kit? Thanks

I brought the whole LED kit. Yes you need to do splice some wiring. It is a lot brighter than the HID. I even put LED on the foglight and its very bright as well.
I will take some night picture tomorrow and post it.
i used something similar to this type with a built in fan. Just to gives you a heads up, if you do install LED setup, the cap on the back of the headlight housing needs to be remove because if you cover it up the fan of the LED will build up heat and may cause the LED malfunction.

unplug the power connector that’s connect to the ballast. Then tap the wire from the LED to the ballast connector red wire and black wire.
Hey KB1Spec what size led did u use? I ordered 9006 but it's not seating in the socket correctly 🙄🙄 such a drag spliced all the wires connected everything, got the lights running but they won't sit in the socket smh.

Ya I told you that when you ordered the set of LED Bulb you need to tell them that you have a factory HID lighting set up because there is a ring goes around the LED bulb so the metal clip on the HID secure the LED bulb
Original ignitors all burnt up HID bulbs, reason for the switch to LED The cover for the HID lights, poked some holes for the fan from the LED light to get some air, also put a hole in the side to run the LED cable to the plug 🔌 for the ballast Final set up Spliced the wires to the ballast.
