I was going to say it sounds like something is stuck in the fan, but with it off and still doing it??? Did you take the glovebox off and see if you can isolate the sound?

I started to get the same thing the other day. As soon as I start the car, there's a loud clicking/tapping behind the glove box for 10-15 secs. Then it stops, but randomly comes back when I'm driving. Sounds like someone's in there tapping so that I can let them out. I tried to look for the sound in the engine thinking it's a pump or something, didn't see it.

I have a similar problem. When the car reaches 40mph, the muted clicking sound begins inside the dash, behind the glove box, and near the upper right corner. I agree that it is a WTF situation. Sorry I have no positive feedback for you.

I am having the same problem in my 2000 TL, just started this weekend. I found the source of the noise... If you stick your head in the floorboard and look under the glovebox and look to the left-hand side (next to the center console) you will see a white plastic arm connected to a metal rod. Right next to that is a small black box which I think is some kind of motor or servo or something to move the white arm back and forth. When the clicking is occuring you can see the white arm trying to move but "sticking and clicking" back and forth. Now that I found the problem I have no idea what to do about it... I think this is some part of the a/c system and the car is trying to automatically close or open something (vent maybe?) with the arm but something is jammed...this happens randomly whether the A/C is off or on so maybe it's not A/C related...anybody have any ideas what these gizmos under the glovebox are????
Thanks, Big J

My 99TL does the same thing. The Servo opens and closes a door on the Heat/Air system. This is a common problem and has been discussed here before. When it's in one position it clicks=not all the time, but is annoying. It is about $90 to replace. Mine makes the noise intermittently. Some day I'll get tired of the noise and change it. You can adjust the Temperature on your heating and cooling system and watch it open and close a door. It only clicks in one position.

Servo update
Hi all,
Just finished removing the servo, not a big deal and no need to remove the glove compartment. After I removed the servo from the mount I left it connected to the wiring harness (hanging down from under the dash buy the wires) and turned the car on and monkeyed with the AC controls to get the servo to move... Luke7 was right, the servo is bad and makes the clicking noise all by itself when not connected to the vent control arms. The servo is a sealed unit so I didn't bother cutting it open, but some gears inside must be stripped. Time to troll local junkyards for a cheap replacement...
Quick removal directions below for anyone interested.
Thanks, BigJ
1. Remove the three 8mm screws from the METAL harness that holds the servo in place, no need to remove the screws in the black plastic of the servo body
2. Before you can disconnect the wire harness (green plastic in my case) you have to remove a small gray plastic insert from the green plug that prevents you from depressing the release button on the green plug for disconnect.
That's it

Burning Brakes
Hey i know this is an old post. I just recently got the clicking noise and i want to confirm it's the right noise you guys are talking about. Don't want to spend 97 dollars on a part and ending up it's the wrong one.
Made a video of that noise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5TPbyjnyGE
Well, it happened when i was driving one day. The stereo is off, AC/Heater is off, it clicks when the car is moving and while it is stopped.
Let me know if thats the same description as you guys had.

Nope not the same noise that I have. READ ABOVE=this thread was very specific to another clicking noise. You can actually put you hand on the SERVO motor and determine the souce of the problem. DID YOU DO THAT?
