Loose Windshield Wiper Linkage

The wiper linkage (not the wiper arms themselves) has an annoying amount of slop in it. When turned off, one can manually move the wiper arms a considerable measure. When turned on, the arms slam at the bottom of each cycle. My mechanic suggests that the problem may lie in the wiper motor transmission assembly, which is concealed.

I'm looking for a DIY repair for this malady. Any advice, starting with how to access the motor ass'y is welcome.

158k miles on the original tranny. Perhaps the 4 speed automatics are more robust than the later 5 speed units.

Hi White :

Been there, done this...

It's a fairly simple task....remove the wiper arms, plastic cover and three bolts. Lots of info if you search on "wiper problems". One tip, don't replace both links as usually one wears out and the other will be pristine. Others here will probably disagree, but it's so simple to take out, changing the other one should it wear out in the future is no big deal, so not a big risk.

BTW - This is one job that this site really helped me on, thanks acurazine and all those who posted !!

Easy fix to replace the rods. Order them online. I replaced my wiper blades also with Bosch wipers. OH what a difference!
