Initialize OPDS Unit

I am planning to replace my passenger side OPDS unit. When reviewing the service manual page 23-29 it references the Honda PGM tester as seen below. Is the PGM tester required to initialize the OPDS unit?

4. "Connect the Honda PGM Tester (A) to the DLC (16P) (B), and follow the tester's prompts in the "SCS" menu (see the Honda PGM Tester Operator's Manual)."

Nope, there is a connector under the dash you can use to initialize it. It is yellow with two conductors. You will need a switch with two solid wires connected. Press the wires into the connector, and toggle the switch. The manual has the procedure listed for how to do this by using a special connector with a jumper wire, follow that procedure. I have tried with just a wire pressing it into the connection back and forth but it is very, very hard to do it. Too much bounce in the connection. A switch makes it much easier. Let me know if you need any more details.

Good to hear that PGM unit isn't needed. I have reset the SRS light a few times so I'm familiar with the process.

I replaced the OPDS unit (new oem) per the steps in the service manual but SRS light blinks 3 times and stays on. The old opds unit will initialize so there must be some other issue. With the old unit, the SRS light will come back on in a day or two... The part numbers on the old unit was a little different. Did Acura give me the wrong part?

So I just looked up the procedure in the manual again - to initialize OPDS, you need to ground the SCS line on the OBDII connector (that is what the PGM tester does in the instructions) and then follow the reset instructions with the jumper or switch on the MES 2P connector.

So basically, jump pins 4 & 9 on the OBDII connector with a solid core wire, then follow the reset procedure.

I checked hondapartsunlimited.com and you have the correct part for 2000/2001 TL. It was updated to fix the problems from the previous unit.

No luck. I repeated the SRS reset process a few times with OBDII pins 4 and 9 shorted. I still get the same 3 blinks and the SRS light stays on. I am happy to hear that the unit I bought is at least correct.

Just to be sure - are you absolutely sure you jumped the correct pins? If you did, turning the ignition on will cause all of the dash lights to start blinking codes.

I was counting the pins backwards... I counted from the top left hand corner and should have started from the bottom right. Everything is working as it should now. Thanks very much for the help!!
