Inconsistent shudder under acceleration

I have a 2000 TL 3.2 that has 210k miles on it. Had the Honda AV6 tranny swap done at ~160k miles.

All fluids are at proper level and use only Honda approved fluids.

Recently any time I push the gas pedal, the car shakes - and it's not a small shake. It's been cold here (10ish) and it only seems to pop up at 45+mph...but not always.

The source is definitely from the engine compartment - i can feel it under my feet as I'm driving.

The confusing part is that as soon as I let off the gas and coast - it stops completely. Would this be a drive shaft issue? Tranny(hope not)?

While warming up in the mornings there's a tick-tick-tick from the engine...and this has NOT had the timing belt done again yet.

HELP!

45mph is about the range where it wants to shift into 5th.

Does it happen when your TC is engaged? You can tell if it is because letting off the gas does not affect engine RPM.

Not sure on the TC(assuming that means Traction Control)...i'll try it next time I'm out. I'll also try manual mode in 4th through the 45-50mph range to see what that does.

Thanks!

Not since I've owned it...I bought it with 120K on it.

Update on some of the above comments. I drove it a good 50-60miles today. Varied speeds from stop and go to highway speeds and of course it behaved like a thoroughbred. No shaking, no nothing. Shifted in and out of 4th/5th in "manual mode". Turned TC on and off in both manual gears and in auto mode.

It was pushing 40F today so I don't know if it's a temp related issue...but it seems to be.

I did not check fluid levels before/during/after but I can't imagine that changing much. I have been watching the ground where I park and with the exception of a power steering fluid drip (AV6 conversion effect)...it's not leaking anything.

Trade in value is about $12...so the safety side (with a 2 year old and one on the way) is the important factor here.

Sorry TC = Torque Converter, in the transmission. TC engage = TC lockup clutch, usually cruzing around 55mph or so.

RPMs don't drop when I let off the gas above 50mph, so the TC appears be working. I had a new torque converter installed when I had the AV6 conversion done...so I'd hope that's not the issue.

I took it in to an import mechanic that I trust. They drove it and put it up on the rack to check it out.

Their inspection results were that the driver front half shaft is bent and should be replaced. They quoted $320 parts and labor + tax.

I'm half-handy, so i'm going to attempt replacing it this weekend and will report back when completed.

Reading thru your post I was going to mention the axles. The inner cv joints seem to go often on this model TL. I had shakes on and off for some time until I changed the axles

As i'm going to attempt it myself, would it be worth changing both? They are pretty cheap to just buy the parts.

ITs probably a good idea to do them both together. I had purchased the Empi brand from Rockauto about 20k miles ago and they seem to be doing fine

Two Duralast half shafts installed and it's like a brand new car.

Chasing a small leak (not from the shaft connections...). I'm 99.87% sure it's not from leaking/drips from topping off the fluids.

Problem solved for now.

Thanks all!
