idle problem 2003 type S

Hey Guys

I just replaced my #3 coil and put a new spark plug in as well (I'm going to replace the remaining plugs asap) I reset the codes by pulling the clock fuse and putting back in. It now runs much better but it is idling funny. The idle drops to almost zero and then jumps up to 700 or 800, and then back down again, and repeats this over and over. Any thoughts????

I assume it was the #3 coil code. I took it to the Acura dealer to get the SRS light turned off, which they fixed, but then they called me and said it was running really rough and I needed a new #3 coil. I told them I would drive it home and fix it myself. I drove it to Advanced Auto and replaced the coil and spark plug in the parking lot. Runs 100% better, but now it has the weird idle problem.

Sometimes when ya have a problem and fix it, the ECU needs to "relearn" some parameters ? If it does not seem to get any better, check the coolant level and fans. May have trapped air within the cooling system ? Also consider cleaning the IAC valve, the EGR passageways and the TB intake if it's been awhile since last done.

It seems to be a little better since I drove it around, Looks like cleaning the IAC valve is my next step

Make sure you are useing 91 octane or better, so the computer is not pulling timing, this will also cause rough idle. Cleaning the IACV is strait forward, and Acura recomends the EGR pasage be cleaned every 90K, so both would be good to do. I would run some sea foam there tank and IM while I was at it.

I need to clean mine too. Is taking the intake, air sensor and throttle body off simple? Is there anything or tips you have for me or is it straight forward, as far as unscrewing and unplugging each section?

Sorry guys Im noob to this. But what is the EGR? My 02 TL is having idle issues also and I just cleaned my IAC valve. But she's still idling rough. Maybe a new IAC? Or do I clean the EGR whatever that is? lol if anyone would like to enlighten me I'd appreciate it!

Thanks closetprisner!
I would finished in about 45minutes to an hour but I bought a gasket and wanted to replace it. That thing was stuck so bad it took me about 4 hrs just to scrap it off with gasket remover and goo gone and a razor blade. Other than that it was really easy.

Any suggestions on how to remove gaskets faster?

Hey MaggaMan, if ya did a good cleaning of the IAC valve, it should be ok.The EGR passageways and TB intake are notorious for getting clogged up. So, take your time and try cleaning this stuff up and see what happens. All these things are common issues and well documented. Try the "DIY" sticky and search for some previous threads on the subject for more details.

I took my time cleaning the IAC and did a very thorough job. I also cleaned the EGR and the passageways. That helped a little bit but I'm still getting a slightly rough idle. It idles at 1500 in park and drops to a little below 1250 in Drive and reverse. My car was also sitting for few months due to a front end collision and didn't have the money to fix it. I already have a New IAC on order. Any other suggestions anyone?

Question..

what did you do to the car before the issue?

did you recently bought it and it was like that or u own for awhile and suddenly the idle went up/fluctuating.. ?

Yeah, maybe bad gas. Try some fuel system cleaner. Have the fuel pressure checked. Check all the wiring connections and grounds. Make sure that the coolant level is up and that the battery is fully charged. Check for vac leaks.

If ya cleaned the IAC valve and made sure everything was sealed up, clear the ECU. Sometimes it's takes some running time to "relearn" the parameters. Try the basic simple stuff before putting on the new IAC valve. May save some money !

Thanks for replying you guys! I know F-16's better than cars lol but im not afraid to tear in my car with the little bit that i know...

CLOSETPRISONER: My old man bought the car brand new back in 2001. Some j@ck@ss cut him off one day and took off. we didnt have the money to fix it immediately so it sat for about 6 months or so in our yard in FL. The car is completely stock. I just took the intake resonator out like 4 days ago. Cleaned my IAC valve and the EGR valve and the passageways. Im gonna clean my throttle body tomorrow and replace the thermostat cause shes overheating right now too! $20 bucks aint too bad for a thermostat i figure. But I really wanna fix the idle that scares me =(

3.2TLc: I added lucas fuel cleaner the day i got it back on the road like a week or two ago. I bought a brand new battery for her too its like 750 cold cranking amps. Would that be a problem? my old man was like thats way too much but homeboy at autozone said it fits. How would I clear my ECU?

To reset the ECU, remove the clock back-up fuse from the passenger side's fuse panel and replace it after a minute or two.

It's best to get the Honda 2 stage T-stat when replacing the old one. Have the cooling system pressure checked for leaks. If low in coolant, the idle can be affected because the ECT thermosensor is getting faked out by potential air pockets within the system.

Ok so heres what went down today..I replaced the thermostat, shes still a little on the warm side. I cleaned the throttle body. Not much difference. I pulled the fuse to reset the ECU. Nothing. I'm starting to think its just my IAC valve or the EGR vavle that may need to be replaced. When I start her up and leave her in park, she idles at ~1500 RPM. Then when I step on the gas the idle constantly jumps from ~1500 RPM's to ~2250 RPM's. When I put my A/C on she sits at ~1250 RPM's. Then when its in any Drive gear she sits at >1250 RPM's. Anything guys??? :|

When ya replaced the T-stat, did ya burp the air from the cooling system ?

THanks 3.2TLc! I was in a rush and forgot to do that. However I replaced my IACV and burped the cooling system. She's driving smooth like she used to! Thanks for the help guys !

2003 Acura tl type s

Hey guys I recently just got a type s tl but it was sitting for 2 years. The car was well maintained before it sat but now when we tried turning it over it starts but it has a really rough idle either just letting it sit or after pressing the gas. I havent put a new battery in yet but i was wondering if i clean out both throttle bodies will it go back to normal or do i change the whole system? And also would the bad battery cause faulty codes to go off in the car? The cells on the battery are probably shit but it still turns the car ove.
sorry for asking but I need help its my first acura lol. Thank you 😬

When you started the car did you drain out ALL the old gas and put in fresh gas?
