I took my 1999 Acura TL in for a smog today and failed due to MIL/Check Engine Light

This vehicle failed the MIL/Check Engine Light test due to failure to successfully complete all OBD self tests.

Bascially I had a check engine light for a few weeks and was finally able to get around to it and figured out it was the primary 02 sensor that was going bad. I had it replaced over the weekend and its been sitting. Stupid me I thought once I deleted it and drove it around for a few minutes before the smog today it would be enough for everything to pass. Anyways it didnt.

Im in need of finding out the best and quickest way to get all OBD self tests completed? Also since I didnt unplug the battery in anyway and just used the OBD scanner to delete the CEL is that all I need to do or do I have to do the complete test?

Any help would be great.

Thanks,
J5

you need to drive it for the system to gather enough info to be ready for testing
Its built in so people cant clear a CEL then go pass smog with a problem~

I have posted from the 02 manual before which had the the acura hurry up method of learning
Basically drive on freeway at constant and different speeds 30 minutes and in town 30 minutes
drive in town - accellerate to 35-45 and slow- stop- repeat multiple times.
stop and start engine a few times

about an hours worth of focused use like that will store enough data for the test to be performed

otherwise 1-2 weeks normal driving is needed

Thanks for the updates. Ive been driving it as much as I can for the past two days so going to drive it around more tomorrow and than take it back and see if they can check to make sure the monitors have completed or not.

Im having no issues driving it around town but highways is another issues with traffic around the time I get off work so not able to do that for 30 minutes as you stated. So Im not sure if its going to pass or not.

Thanks for the feedback. I drove around a little bit more today and was able to get on the freeway for a bit. Didnt get to do the entire 30 minutes but I took it in anyways and car passed with flying colors.

Thanks again!
