HID Headlight - Moisture and HID Bulb
Hey Guys,
I've had a wicked winter - I'm now on my third tranny, after the second only made it 9,000KM's. Then a boring Audi decided to share the same lane as me and slammed into my passenger side.
So - I had all the damage fixed. Then the passenger side headlight enclosure began to get moisture within. The HID D2R bulb went out about a week or so later. My HID's are very dated (original) and I hope its just the bulb!! (halogen and turn are OK)
But, I am worried that the ballast is fried - should I do a quick swap to confirm?
Once I confirm my level of damage, how do I fix the seal on the enclosure?
I know a lot of people buy from hidextra - If this is still the case, I'll grab a set of bulbs or a kit depending on my damage, probably 5K or 6K's.
Thanks so much!!

There's a DIY thread on how to deal with moisture in the headlight pod or do a search on "HID" and it will pull all the threads.
The general consensus seems to be when water is present in the pod, it probably has waterlogged the ballast/controller unit located directly underneath the headlight pod.

it does,,moisture = rust,,and electrical circuits dont get along,,resistance varies etc.
diy cheap seal the housing with silcone on the outside, or the diy method with removal of lens,,, or get new housings on the bay for 200 or so u$d a pair
then install a `kit`,,I like the one from hidextra, it was cheap, install was easy, and works fine so far
its got waterproof parts..which is a major bonus~

Thanks for the advice guys!
I've always loved the stock Philips 4300K's, I've discovered they age after a short time to 5000K. They have this tiny beautiful hint of blue, not too obsessive (Canadian cops are mean).
I just hope to get close to the same power and effect out of an hidextra kit @ 5000K.
$70 USD for a pair of D2R ballasts and bulbs is damn cheap, almost worrysome-cheap.

my drivers side headlight was out due to moisture. i went on hidextra.com and ordered the 5000k bulb along with the 2 ballasts. i also went on autopartswarehouse.com and ordered a new headlight unit for around $85 (which if youve seen the oem price, its dirt cheap). after custom installing the new ballast in place of the waterlogged stock transformer, and splicing the ends that did not fit, I found out that the ballast i had ordered along with the bulbs were high beam, not low. when you order, call and make sure you know what you are getting. when i installed the high beam in the low beam spot and turned them on i shorted the ballast, so make sure you dont do that. i now have to buy a stock transformer for the low beam, and get a replacement ballast for the high beam. the bulb on mine was fine, so unless you can find it aftermarket for very cheap, i would go ahead and do the quick swap and check your bulb and transformer, and that could be your problem just like it was with me. also i would go ahead and buy the whole headlight unit because you cannot imagine the amount of water that is in the unit already until you take it off and turn it upside down. report back with what you find and maybe ill be able to help more.
