Gas mileage question

Hey guys I dont know if there are any other posts about this but I am
having issues with gas milege.. I filled up a week ago and I drove 197 miles to an empty tank. Not sure if this is accurate for our cars. Seems like im burning gas quicker. Any suggestions for the issue?

got to handle the car smoothly whilr handleing up drive as intellegently as possible driving to hard is bad on the suspension and body ya cant tear up mounts and axles up quick. Try to clean the egr and seafoam ngk irrdium or denso irridums.. dont carry alot of weight the less the better. try to improve driving habits and go from there good luck. dw1 transmission fluid for the win

Drove doing what? City? Highway? Combined????
Need to be a Little more Precise than That....

The Standard for our Cars is something like 20-21mpg City / 27-28mpg Highway (Normal like a Well Kept Car).
Im getting something like 24-25 City / 30-31 Highway but with alof of Mods on the Engine and Alot of Services.

If you get 197 out of a Tank in Highway something is REALLY WRONG...
I can get almost 460miles out of a Tank (If I drove all the Way to Empty)...
On city half of it is Normal for Me.. 220 or 230 miles depending on A/C, Load, If Im driving like Maniac, etc..

That does not sound right. You have a leakage?

Hey Hondakid23, there's alot of things that can affect overall gas mileage. If you live in a colder climate.....the winter gas sucks, plus your driving habits. Extended warm ups yield "0" mpg.

The car has 10 years plus 100k wear & tear. Cleaning the fuel system, TB intake, EGR passageways, along with a basic tune-up with new NGK plugs may help. Make sure that the tires are properly inflated. Try a different brand of gas.

run tier 1 quality gas,,thats most big names, contains more cleaners than govt minimums

ckd tire pressure? outside air temp affects tire pressure
the normal things as noted above,, and get the codes ckd just for fun at most parts store
No CEL on dash correct? but it works during the self test at ignition on?
unusual driving pattern suddenly?

front O2 sensor is most likely culprit for low mpg,,if the plugs are less than 60kmiles on them and are the correct ngk,,
wrong plugs will kill it too,,if someone slapped plugs in it to sell the car for example...using 2 buck whatevers instead of correct 8$ each NGK ones

whats the car year and miles?

my 01 sees lots of in town stop and go to 40 mph,,a little freeway 70 cruise
and gets ~300 to the low level light (3 gal remaining)
any less and the wife has been abusing vtec again~
more means better use of cruise control

note- i run 18 inch rims with some sticky 225-40s ,,that reduces mileage= but fun factor increased on every turn

I get about the rated 19mpg, since I see nearly 100% city stop and go. And that's with my lead foot lol, I punch it a lot or give it a bit of gas from stops, usually shifts at about 3.5k is D5. If I drove like a normal person I'd probably see 22-23 mpg.
About 250 miles before light comes on, still have to do egr cleaning and I see a lot of idling, and 75% of driving I have passengers.
Like above, tire pressure, correct plugs, and driving habits are main culprits. Have you sea foamed it?
My mileage went up around 2-3mpg after plug change and sea foam.

Well I usually use my car to drive to work I live 6 miles away from the airport and I can say if I put 20$-25$ in my tank (premium) from HESS gas station it lasts about 2 days about 46-54 miles off that. I recently changed my spark plugs like 2 months ago. I see that one of you guys suggested a different brand of Gas such as Mobil or Shell. Should I put a bottle of seafoam in the tank?

Yeah, try the Seafoam, It's beneficial to cleaning the fuel system and injectors, especially if the car has been running on a lower quality gas. You will usually notice increased mpg with a better brand of gas.

If you have not yet read the "DIY"s, check out the EGR passageway cleaning....along with the TB intake. A new air filter and PCV valve may also help. Did you install "NGK" plugs ? Are you using synthetic or dino 5-30 oil ? Make sure that your coolant's t-stat and sensor's are working properly. Don't over-extend warm ups and idling.

400-450 miles per tank for me on mix of city/highway, translates into 24-28MPG. I run only on chevron 91 gasoline. The key to TL gas mileage is cruise control and smooth acceleration. Get to your cruising speed and engage the cruise control. This car loves cruise control and hates being in VTEC when it comes to saving fuel.

Yeah I get 25 MPG minimally I drive hwy mainly 70+ milesa day. Gas prices change so much it cost varies for how far you can go on the amount of gas purchased. 3.48 a gallon 93 oct just pumped 40.00 should be able to go 250+

I live in Cincinnati and drive about 60 miles a day. Roughly 80% highway, 20% city. I have learned that cruise control is your best friend. I've been averaging 26.5 mpg

Ever since I purchased my TL, I've always used CC. When I first got it, it was bad on gas, but after doing what all these other guys are saying to do, your MPG will increase. I was getting about 17-19 MPG (City/Hwy) & now I'm getting 21-25 MPG (City/Hwy) plus my driving habits play a key factor.

146000 on my TL-S. I average 22-26 combined city and highway. 30 on the highway. All depends on how you drive. If you bang 2/3rd gears at 3500 RPM expect less. I keep RPM'S less than 2500 and always get good mileage. Stop and go traffic constantly starting out a 3600 pound car decreases mileage a lot. Rolling up to traffic lights and not stopping the car increased my mileage. Not always possible but when you can it surely helps.

On a good day on the HWY 27 to 30, city 22 to 26, I probably avg 26 to 27. That's running premium gas (a must) and keep the maintenance current.

Talking Personal Mileage

2003 TL-S, 243,000 miles. Always use Chevron 93 Octane w/Lucas Ethanol Treatment. Average 26 mpg mixed city/highway. Will post pic of accurate mileage upon fill up. last tank was a little worse because I drove like a maniac for most of the tank. Light came on at 324(light comes on for me with 3.2 gallons left). 324/14.0=23.143 mpg. 23.143 x 17.2 = 398.05 miles to a full tank, running completely empty. Best tank mixed city/highway: 463.7 and used 16.745 gallons = 27.692 mpg. I got 34 on a trip to Savannah and back.

31.5 mpg highway, 2002 TL-P. Over a 5000 mile highway trip and measured over several other 200 - 500 mile highway trips. 17 - 18 mpg in city driving. Very efficient car on the road at steady state speed once you get into 5th gear. And not very sensitive to speed (65 to 75 mph seems the same).
