!! Gas mileage !!

fuck guys--i cant win it seems !!!

so i had 18in rims on my TL in the summer and i was getting like 400miles to a full tank on the highway

now i put on 16in factory accord steelies on for the fall till i store it for the winter and im getting fuckin terrible gas mileage

i have no idea whats good here----this fuckin sucks bad !!

i did every possible thing i can think of a few months ago to maintain it

plugs, ( NGK ), cleaned the throttle body and EGR passage, correct air pressure, cleaned air filter

what do you guys think can be wrong here--what else can i do ???

THANKS IN ADVANCE !!

If the winter tires are smaller diameter, the speedometer and odometer will be inaccurate. Try checking accuracy vs. Garmin type gps that shows your speed.

have you weighed the tire sets--is there a major differance?

you can ck the size vs speedo change with a calculator on www.tirerack.com and other sites

going from the stock 205 60 16, to 225-40-18s actually fixed my slightly fast reading speedo
ckd today against 3 different roadside radar displays,,spot on!

seafoamed it lately?
the new brakes are not dragging? calipers are working right- not one stuck partially on?

leave a hose clamp loose when cleaning air filter? cover cracked and didnt notice?
Vac good? no vac loss at broken motor mount?

seafoamed it 4 days ago in the gas tank

brakes are not dragging----calipers are perfect

i have a cold air intake---and i cleaned the filter

and wud a broken motor mount really cause bad gas mileage to that extent ???

I kinda think it might be a fuel issue. What grade and brand of fuel are you burning?

Our cars has really good gas mileage on the highway. I was getting about 32mpg from Richmond to Boston. Mixed driving with city and highway, i'm getting like 22mpg. 65% highway.

I get 250 to the hank tank these days highway driving. The lower the car the less drag increase mpg's. larger rims helps too if they aren't too heavy

Re did the math and its about 19 miles from home to school, school to work and back home.

38miles. 1.5 days roughly of doing that.

how would i test how many miles my tank gets? set it to trip b and reset the odometer? and just drive till its gets on E?

i always use cruise control every where i go also, usual speed i go is 40mph everywhere city or around 60-80 highway

fill tank to first shutoff of nozzle
reset trip
when down to 1/4 tank or less- refill to first click of nozzle
Helps to use same station and pump
now some basic math
miles driven divided by gallons needed to refill to same level at starting point
example 300 miles 15 gallons = 20mpg

How many gallons is our tank? Just gonna wait till im near E, fill it up all the way, drive again till it hits E, do another run and average them out.

Tank 1 = X miles / tank gallon = miles 1
Tank 2 = X miles / tank gallon = miles 2

Miles 1 + miles 2 = X Miles / 2 = MPG Average

You dont need to wait till your empty. Fill up the tank, reset the trip and drive the car till when you would normally fill up. Take the amount of miles and divide it by the amount of gallons used to fill it back up. You can do this at 1/2 tank 1/4 tank when the low fuel light comes on (which is usually the best to get a more accurate number for the tank full.

Oh and the tank is just over 17 gallons. Low fuel light usually comes on with about 3+- gallons left.

our cars are tuned to run min. 91 octane. id use nothing less as some people say u can see a drop in mpg by anything lower and also run the risk of messing something up..

there is no prob running to E, there is still gas in the tank at that indication
and lower,,as I learned

the low fuel light is to give you warning that `sometime today`,,within 50 miles as a conservative estimate, its time to get gas

the car is actually designed to run on 94, but the ecu can compensate for 91
anything lower causes several unseen problems and will not offset lost mpg for the 2 bucks a tank you saved
if a station has 87, it has 91,,use it or sell the TL

Well for me 87 costs me more to use than 91 costs. I get worse mileage with it, usually about 60 miles or so. That difference is more than the difference between 87 and 91. Also add up what you are saving at the pump between the 2. 3 bucks maybe? Its not worth it!

If its mostly city driving the difference will be smaller, BUT you should still put in what the manufacturer recommends. Its what the car is optimized for. How much are you actually saving by putting in the cheaper stuff? Not much!

3.99 for 91 and happy its dropped from 4.29-4.49 !! for a gallon!! recently
Ca has its special extra bs added to the gas to get less mpg,, so we really take it
from both ends

but--- here its only 20 cents a gal price diff between 87 and 91,,
thats 3 dollars total more for a fillup from the low light ~15gal
hardly worth considering use of 87,,not like its a dollar a gal more

Take a few less trips you dont really need, or combine errands, avoid short trips.
program GPS with days errands for `the great circle route` to save even more fuel

anything to avoid the car running less than perfect is the plan
give up starbucks for a day (example)

ck the owner book - 94 octane is what they designed the TL engine for.
thats why the gas cap door says 91 MINIMUM,,,minimum meaning `not less than`~

some states have 94, but not many I found, so 91 is the acceptable `minimum alternative` to the spec 94

Va has 93 that's what I put in, recently cost me about 40 to fill up. Do they really put in shit to impair gas mileage? Clever Bastards.

Did you try cleaning the fuel injectors. dirty injectors can definitely give you bad gas mileage. and also I found that getting rid of the carbon buildup in the engine helps a lot. Seafoam treatment is pretty good. other than that I use about a tbs of ATF in each cylinder and it cleaned all the carbon out of my engine, my TL runs like it was new. sounds crazy but it works and it didn't hurt my O2 sensors. after you do any kind of tuneup to the engine the last thing to do is reset the ECU.

you cant compute on a refill to partial level--no way to get it same as before, guage always moves after you run the engine a minute

from first click of nozzle shutoff, drive 1/2 tank or more for decent accuracy, refill to first click
same station and pump gives best result

Im confused when you say "first click" when the pump shuts off automatically?

i just hit 65miles with 6-7 gallons and its about 1.5 notches from empty.. i cant be getting 9-10mpg

Does anyone else feel bad for Tony not getting this?
Fill up your gas tank. Drive it ~ 100 miles, fill it up again. That is how much gas your car uses to drive 100 miles, now do the math.
I blame the public school systems...

yes, the pumps in north america have an auto-shutoff system
when it stops the first time,,clicks OFF, stop fueling

It is possible to add more fuel to the tank, if you were getting on the freeway for a 400 mile trip you might `top off` the tank, but otherwise stop at the first click off

that will give you a measured place
do as said above but 200+ miles will give you a better `average` than 100
the guage means nothing especially when its low

So you assume that im automatically dumb because i didnt comprehend with what he meant by "first click"? I could shove a magazine in a gun and itll make a click. Does that mean i shot it? No. Dont assume if you dont know

Ill fill up my tank today with 91, drive 200 miles, fill it up and then average it out.
