Engine and TCS lights on at the same time?
Engine and TCS lights on at the same time?
I own a 1999 TL with about 67k mi on it. Last week the check engine and TCS lights came on at the same time. The TCS light has gone off a couple of times but the engine light stays on. I reset the lights and they remained off for several days but then came on again. I noticed no change in the performance of the car. The code was decoded to “insufficient EGR flow”. The mechanic cleaned the throttle body and fuel injection system but the lights came on in unison again. I read on a forum somewhere that the two lights together indicated a transmission issue. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

I called my dealership when my CEL and TCS lights came on at the same time. When I turn the car off, the TCS light goes off and comes back on a few minutes later while the CEL was always on. The mechanic said the car is programmed to turn on the TCS when the CEL comes on. He said "People tend to ignore one light for a while, but no one is dumb enough to ignore two lights at the same time".

I'm having this problem too. When the TCS light isn't on, acceleration is fine. Once the TCS light comes on and I try to accelerate, I hear a noise coming from underneath the car....Kinda of like a rattle. Anyone know what this is?

First off....Thanks for the response, fsttyms1. I just took my car (1999 TL) to Autozone to get the codes checked. Here's what came back. Yes, a noise when the light is on....no other time.
1.) P0401: EGR Flow Insufficient. I think this is causing the noise.
2.) P1457 Manf. Control Auxiliary Emission Controls.

the other one i dont have the manual for infront of me. im not quite sure of that one. I dont know what would be causing the rattle unless the engine is running rougher causing it. Is the motor running bad when its like that or is it shaking some?

Thanks for the link. I'll check that out.
I think the EGR valve, along with the TCS light coming on are responsible for the noise. Like I said, you can only hear the noise once the TCS light comes on. The motor isn't running bad....it's hard to explain. Almost sounds like a bearing rattling when you first push the pedal.

Hmm!!
Help Help!!..........I love my TL to death but something scared me last night while I was driving back from work. I was driving around 75-80 on the freeway and the check engine light came off along with the TCS light. I did'nt notice any rattling or squeeking noise as some of you mentioned earlier. I took it to the local Tires Plus this morning and got an engine diagnostic done and this is what the guy told me.
He said that the P0740(40) D4 Indicator is on. This is the for the Lock Up control System. He also gave me the entire Engine Detection sheet and it does not mention the EGR that most of you are referring to at all. Am I dealing with the same problem as most of you are....OR is this something different. I have'nt noticed any noises cuz its raining outside so little squeeks here and their are hard to notice.
Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.
Does the Warranty link apply to me?

Well, I solved the mystery noise. It was the lifters. I added a quart of oil, and it took care of it.
I also decided to take my intake off and clean EGR port....Holy hell, that thing was DIRTY!!! I gave it a good cleaning and threw it back on. I reset the codes (Was throwing the P0401) and it stayed off all last night. I could actually tell my car was pulling harder. It was great. The TCS light reset last night as well. On my way to work this morning, both lights came on again at the exact same time. I'm going to take it back to Autozone to get it scanned again. Doesn't the EGR code throw even after you clean it? I'm sure I'm still getting the EVAP canister code.
My old roomie, who helped me with the project last, is a pretty solid mechanic, and he still feels like the tranny is going. When I shift into drive, it engages once (lightly) and then engages much harder a second time.

Figured it out!!
Thanks for all your help guys!!
I took it to Acura today and they said the code P0740 means the D3 and D4 Lock system is going bad meaning that its a Transmission problems. He said since my car only has 79k miles on it Acura will replace the transmission as part of their Goodwill agreement upon purchase.
So if you did get the P0740 code and somehow the mechanic turned it off......please take it to Acura cuz they will replace your transmission if the car does not have 100k miles on it.
