Electrical Problems
4 months ago I went to start my 2001 TL and the car was completely dead. No clicking noise or anything. Thought it was the battery (even though the battery was brand new), or maybe the alternator.
AAA came out and gave me a boost and the car started up. While driving, the dash lights began to flicker and the engine would cut in and out. Took the car to a mechanic and he told me that there was a short somewhere because some wiring had been damaged by a heat source (exhaust?). Said he fixed it and adjusted the wiring away from the heat source.
Now, I am driving and the odometer readout shuts off and on as I am driving. Does anyone know what may be causing this? I'm worried about having another wiring catastrophe. Please help.

So it was perfect for 4 months- is that correct?
Have you gone to a parts store for a free battery-charging system test?
Could be an alternator-??
Need more details of what alleged repair that was made- where and what wires?
was other work done on the car right before the dead battery incident?

The 4 months after the repair were perfect. It was definitely a short. Don't know what wires were fixed...will try to find out.
Alternator was tested, works fine. The battery was never actually dead last time, in fact it was fully charged..somehow when the car got a jump from a booster pack (not a car to car jump though) it made the car start even though there was short.
What I'm seeing now is different than before..the last time the entire dash readout would flicker in and out and the car would feel as if was going to turn off while driving. Also, it would not start again after it was parked unless it was boosted.
Now just the odometer display window (mileage, temperature, etc.) goes off for a second or two and quietly turns back on. No flickering or effect on the other dash lights.
Car has never had any major work except transmission replacement 3 years ago. I'll try to find out what wires were repaired. Thanks.
