This damn mirror.....

This is my second rear view mirror to take a shit on me. This is getting ridiculous, I have only had it for a little over a year. Its always dark now, it doesn't lighten back up.

Just a shot in the dark (no pun intended) but you don't by chance have anything covering the photo cathode on the front case of the mirror, right?

Mine works sometimes but most of the time it doesn't, lately. No weird spots on my mirror and nothing is blocking the sensors. It used to work really well and I've always had 20% tint in the rear windshield.

Hopefully you have the updated design that won't leak. A lot of people sold their old mirrors after Magna Donnelly sent them free replacements with the updated design. Magna Donnelly sent a postage paid shipping label in order to get the old mirrors back but not everyone sent them back.

Wow. Sorry to read about that.

Unfortunately, Magna Donnelly has stopped sending out the free replacements around September of 2007. See last few pages of the "Rear View Mirror exploded!" thread for more details:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78061

You might be able to get some goodwill coverage from Acura. Check with your local dealer or possibly the Customer Care group via the toll-free number.

In any case, you can buy a replacement mirror for about $100 online. That was the cost I was looking at before I found that free replacements were available. Just make sure that you're getting the updated design as they apparently won't leak. (BTW, I have no idea how to tell the designs apart.)

Finally, be careful if you replace the mirror yourself. Some forum members have cracked their windshields doing this.

Good luck!

Ever since I heard about acid leaking out of the RVM, I turned it off completely. Its been about a year and a half I havent used this feature. Nothing behind me bothers me, ONLY if someones highbeams are on, then I take a different action.

It seems that it is heat related, though, not usage related, from what I understand.

The updated mirrors are a bit thicker front to back (back being the mirror itself) and the bottom where the green light is a bit lower and the green light is on the opposite side of the mirror (my new mirror has green light on the left, old one had green light on the right)

If the mirror in your 2002 TL is the older Magna Donnelly design I would keep a close eye on it. If the mirror leaks it can cause hundreds of dollars of damage to the car's interior.

I would be... that's why I replaced mine prior to a problem. $70 is peace of mind. Aside from the major damage it can do to your car, the health issues could last a lifetime.

My mirror is still working, and looks OK, but I don't trust it after reading this thread. I called Acura Customer Services and politely asked if there was anything they could do. They sent me to Acura Care on the basis that the mirror may have special coverage even though the bumper to bumper warranty is long gone. Acura Card acknowledged that the mirrors leak, but compared it to spilling a soda in the car. I checked back with Customer Services, and they said there's nothing they can do in terms of goodwill assistance. So I'm going to have to buy one...

Yeah if soda was filled with mercury and could eat through plastic and leather in a minute or two.

Yeah, I guess it's a lot like spilling a soda in your car....... That is if you happen to drink a soda that contains a corrosive mix of chemicals that will permanently damage the plastic and leather surfaces that it contacts.

And yes, definitely buy a new mirror. And don't buy a used mirror so that you can be sure that you're getting the latest, improved, design.

I contacted Magna Donnely directly and got a goodwill replacement from them, had it in less than a week. Have you tried that route?

About 3 months ago I started down that path, I was stone walled. No email or voicemail I left was answered. I left and emailed dozens. Figured my time/health was worth a litlt more then $80. I bit the bullet so to speak.

Like many other forum members, I also received a free replacement mirror from Magna Donnelly. They even sent it via Fed Ex.

But they apparently stopped sending out free replacements in late 2007.
