Code P0740

I have a 2003 Acura TL with almost 117,000 miles, I purchased 3 years ago from the Acura dealer. It is supposed to be a certified Acura. For the last month I have been having problems, I was stuck in traffic on the highway when the problem occured. When starting to move it would not go over 20mph and eventually stopped altogether and would not go forward or backward. I cut the engine and started it back up it went about 5 miles up the road and did the same thing again, I turned it off started it and it ran fine. I took it to a transmission place for them to check it out they told me that they needed to drop the transmission for $600 to tell me what was wrong with it. Did't go with them, so after doing some research I would that my car was on the recall list for transmissions. I took it to the acura dealership and was told that I needed a new transmisson for $5400. That was not going to happen so I called Acura Corp went through the motions with trying to get them to pay for the transmission since it was under a recall, they would only give me a discount which brought the price down to $2800. They would not totally pay for the transmission because they claim it was fixed in 2004 and I was out of the warranty miles on the transmission.
Took the car to another transmission shop they say it is not the transmission it is the Throttle Body (ERG Valve) and the Mass Airflow, which I think they are trying to rope me in with something small and then say in addition it is the transmission, had to pay him $60 to tell me that. So I took it to Autozone their machine came up with the P0740 code which is:
Transmission Lock Up control system default
Low transmission Fluid
Poor electrical connection
Failed TCC Solenoid
My question is should I get the Solenoids changed or go ahead and get the transmission rebuilt?
I had my transmission fluid changed at Midas 3 months ago. I don't want to keep spending little money which adds up to big money and then I still have to come up with the money to have the transmission rebuilt.
And I still have to pay a car note.

Unfortunately when that code comes up 99.9% of the time the trans is done. You may want to take acura up on the 2800 (but make sure they are offering a warranty with it)

Sound like your converter is coming apart, the converter clutch material clogged up the filter. It would drives ok until the filter screen is clogging up. and the pump will just picking up air instead of tranny fluid, will cause it a "no go" or slipping condition. If you shut the car off for a little bit, the material will come back out from the filter screen as the fluid settle down to the bottom of the tranny. And you could drive it again for a short time. You will need a rebuild with a new converter.

Is it better to go with a rebuilt transmission or a refurbished transmission?

What is a refurbished transmission ? You can have it rebuild or get a reman it's up to your call. They all will come with a warranty. Just go with the one that is more affordable and better warranty. Good luck.

Flushed, or just replaced? Did they put the correct fluid in it? If not you might have a case with Midas.

Yes, you're right. THe correct term is remanufactured not refurbished. The remanufactured tranny comes with a 3 year warranty and the rebuild comes with a 2 year warranty.

Until they tear down the transmission there is no way to tell the cost of the rebuild. I've been told by my mechanic (not the transmission shop that would do the work) to expect to spend in the neighborhood of $3K.

I guess I've answered my own question that the better option in the remanufactured tranny.

Thanks!
